HEADTEACHER GILLIAN REW COMMITS MISCONDUCT DURING SCHOOL TRIP
Disturbing revelations have surfaced regarding former headteacher Gillian Rew, who allegedly engaged in inappropriate behavior during a school trip to Lockerbie in September 2014.Reports indicate she held her breasts and made remarks about them, as well as telling a male student his body was 'too sexy.' During a General Teaching Council Scotland (GTCS) hearing, she admitted to consuming a significant amount of alcohol—eight glasses of wine—and engaging in conduct deemed inappropriate.
The official details reveal she used offensive language and made suggestive comments, including instructing a student to 'put his body away because it was too sexy,' and pulling herself up from the floor by clutching a pupil’s ankles.
She reportedly entered students’ bedrooms and reached into her top to retrieve crisps from between her breasts.
Despite these serious allegations, she was not removed from the teaching register but was ordered to comply with a two-year Conditional Registration, involving frequent alcohol testing and providing samples.
Mrs Rew, who earned around £74,000 annually, expressed deep remorse, describing herself as 'mortified' and 'in great distress,' attributing her behavior to work-related stress and alcohol dependence.
She also shared that she felt 'devastated' and 'ashamed,' and that she has since undergone therapy and alcohol counseling.
She maintained that her pupils probably would not have found her actions particularly alarming or upsetting, viewing them as 'light banter.' The case panel acknowledged her personal challenges but concluded that her conduct was only narrowly outside the bounds of professional fitness to teach, citing support from colleagues and students.
Her misconduct occurred while she was heavily intoxicated and under considerable stress, and she has since shown remorse.
The findings, documented by the GTCS, resulted in her receiving a Conditional Registration Order rather than complete removal from the register.
