Coatbridge Sexual Abuser
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community, Gerard Porteous, a 59-year-old man from Paisley, has been sentenced to prison for a series of heinous sexual offenses committed over a span of more than three decades. The crimes, which include rape, assault, and indecent assault, were carried out against multiple women, with some victims enduring prolonged periods of abuse.

One of the victims, who bravely came forward to report the abuse, suffered sustained attacks over a period of six years. Her ordeal is just one example of the horrifying treatment she endured at the hands of Porteous, whose actions have left deep scars. The case highlights the courage of victims who, despite the trauma, chose to speak out against their attacker.

Gerard Porteous’s criminal history is extensive. In 2016, he received a 12-year prison sentence after being convicted of sexual offenses involving three women in Airdrie and Paisley, with incidents dating from 1994 to 2013. His previous convictions further underscore a pattern of predatory behavior spanning decades.

Most recently, in 2018, Porteous was convicted of multiple counts of rape, assault, and indecent assault related to two women he abused during the 1980s and 1990s. These convictions culminated in his latest sentencing at the High Court in Glasgow, where he was handed a significant penalty. The court ordered that he serve a minimum of six years behind bars, but with the possibility of remaining incarcerated for life.

He was also issued an Order for Lifelong Restriction, a measure that allows for his continued detention if authorities determine he still poses a threat to public safety. This means that Porteous could potentially spend the rest of his life in prison, depending on assessments of his risk.

Police Scotland publicly commended the bravery of the victims, emphasizing that their courage in coming forward would have a lasting impact. The force acknowledged that the victims would likely be deeply affected by the trauma for many years to come, but their actions have contributed to removing a dangerous individual from the community and ensuring justice was served.
