GERARD MORGAN FROM CATFORD SENTENCED FOR GROOMING AND SEXUAL ABUSE OF 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Catford, a local shopkeeper named Gerard Morgan has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of grooming, sexually abusing, and attempting to rape a 14-year-old girl who visited his store. The incident has raised serious concerns about child safety and the exploitation of vulnerable minors in the area.Gerard Morgan, aged 46 and residing on Sandhurst Road, owned a shop that specialized in selling baseball caps. The troubling sequence of events began in the autumn of 2012 when the young girl, who was just 14 at the time, visited Morgan’s shop to browse the selection of caps. It was during this initial encounter that Morgan began to establish a deceptive friendship with her, which would later escalate into criminal acts.
Over the course of their interactions, Morgan, who has been described as “every parent’s nightmare,” used manipulative tactics to gain the girl’s trust. He offered her gifts and showered her with compliments, creating a false sense of friendship and security. As their relationship progressed, Morgan started offering the girl lifts in his car, during which he committed acts of sexual abuse. Among the presents he bought her was an iPad mini, further entrenching his manipulative behavior and grooming tactics.
The police investigation was triggered after the girl was taken to an address in Blackheath in January of the following year. During this visit, she was offered an orange juice drink, which she consumed. She subsequently passed out and awoke hours later to find her clothes disheveled. She confided in someone about her condition, which led to authorities being alerted to the incident. This revelation prompted a thorough investigation into Morgan’s activities.
In February of the same year, Morgan was arrested. Despite denying the allegations, police uncovered evidence of his repeated contact with the girl, including hundreds of messages exchanged over a short period. The investigation revealed that Morgan’s interactions with her were not only frequent but also deeply inappropriate, involving grooming and sexual advances.
In December of the previous year, Morgan was formally charged with multiple offenses, including attempted rape, grooming a child, and sexual assault. The case culminated in a court hearing at Woolwich Crown Court, where Morgan was sentenced on June 30. The court handed down a five-year prison term for attempted rape, a four-year sentence for grooming, and an additional six months for sexual assault, with all sentences to run concurrently.
Detective Constable Ken Tran, who led the investigation under the Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command (SOECA), emphasized the severity of Morgan’s crimes. He stated, “Gerard Morgan is a dangerous offender who exploited a very vulnerable child for his own sexual needs. The victim has shown courage in reporting Morgan, who has now been convicted and will go to prison for a long time, safeguarding other children.”
Furthermore, Detective Chief Inspector Pete Thomas of SOECA added, “Gerard Morgan is every parent’s nightmare, a sex offender who targets children and tries to beguile them with presents and compliments. I believe there will be other victims, and I urge anyone who has experienced similar exploitation or grooming to come forward. It is vital that we protect children from such predators.”
Authorities have urged anyone with information about Gerard Morgan’s activities to contact SOECA via the police non-emergency number 101 or to call Crimestoppers anonymously at 0800 555 111. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and community awareness in safeguarding children from sexual exploitation and abuse.
