GERARD MCGEEHAN SENTENCED IN DUBLIN FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON YOUNG GIRL OVER 20 YEARS AGO
In a case that has spanned decades and brought to light painful memories, Gerard McGeehan, a 47-year-old man from Dublin, has been sentenced to four years in prison for sexually assaulting a young girl more than twenty years ago.The incident, which occurred in the mid-1970s and early 1980s, involved two separate assaults on the girl when she was just six and twelve years old.
McGeehan, who was residing on Clanmaurice Road in Donnycarney, Dublin at the time, was convicted in February by a jury at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
The court found him guilty of two counts of sexual assault, specifically relating to incidents in 1975 and 1982.
These charges stemmed from allegations that he had sexually abused the girl during those years, with the victim now an adult choosing to come forward and seek justice.
During the trial, McGeehan maintained his innocence, pleading not guilty to a total of ten charges of indecent assault that spanned from October 1975 to September 1985.
The court proceedings lasted for seven days, during which the prosecution and defense presented their cases, but it was the testimony of the victim that proved most compelling.
Judge Michael White, presiding over the case, acknowledged that the charges had been vigorously contested.
While it is uncommon for a judge to comment on the findings of a jury, Judge White made an exception in this case, describing the victim as a “searingly truthful” witness.
His comments underscored the credibility of her account and the seriousness of the allegations.
Prior to the trial, the victim, who is related to McGeehan, chose to waive her right to anonymity.
She explicitly requested that her name be made public, and the media complied with her wishes, revealing the identity of the accused.
This decision was part of her effort to confront her past and seek justice for the trauma she endured decades earlier.
Ultimately, the court sentenced Gerard McGeehan to four years in prison, marking a significant moment in the pursuit of justice for victims of sexual abuse, especially those who have waited many years to see their perpetrators held accountable.
