GERALD MCGROORY SENTENCED IN GREENOCK FOR CHILD SEXUAL IMAGE OFFENCES
A Greenock man, Gerald McGrory, aged 62, was found to be in possession of a large collection of child abuse images on his mobile phone, which he carried around for several months. The images included disturbing sexual exploitation of girls as young as three.
McGrory was also involved in distributing both still and moving images from his device before his arrest.
Authorities discovered that he had engaged in a 15-month text message exchange about sharing such images with another paedophile prior to the raid.
McGrory was apprehended during an intelligence-led police operation in his town centre flat, which took place at dawn.
During the investigation, police seized his phone, a laptop, and paper documents containing multiple usernames and passwords.
An initial review of the device uncovered indecent images of children.
Prosecutor Martina McGuigan explained to the sheriff court that: "Police received confidential information and a search warrant was sought and granted." She added, "An initial examination of the phone revealed indecent images of children." McGrory refused to comment when questioned and made no reply during a police interview at Greenock police station on October 28, 2020, after being cautioned and charged.
His phone contained a total of 72 images, including still photos and videos, with 69 being accessible without additional effort.
The collection included five Category A images, five Category B, and 49 Category C images.
The videos consisted of eight Category A movies, three Category B, and two Category C.
He had collected this material between July 1 and October 28, 2020.
Through his lawyer, Aidan Gallagher, McGrory pleaded guilty to distributing or showing these images on various occasions from November 26, 2019, to March 3, 2020.
It was revealed that he used the Telegram app to share illicit images and engaged in a lengthy text conversation with another individual engaging in similar deviant activities.
Ms McGuigan stated, "A conversation was found within this application which involved the discussion and sharing of images depicting child sexual exploitation as well as adult pornography." The chat history spanned from July 31, 2019, until October 27, 2020.
The prosecutor also noted that many of the images were stored within the device's gallery or shared via Telegram, including at least one moving image and one still image that McGrory had shared himself.
The Crown is requesting a five-year sexual offences prevention order (SOPO) against McGrory, which would include seven conditions to restrict his access to certain online activities.
Such orders aim to protect the public and may require the offender to have monitoring software on their devices.
Sheriff Joseph Hughes deferred sentencing until April 27 to allow for a background report and further consideration of the SOPO.
McGrory’s solicitor reserved his plea in mitigation for that date, and McGrory was immediately placed on the Sex Offenders Register.
