In December 2007, Gerald Charnley, a 55-year-old widower residing in Brierfield, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison after being convicted of serious child sex offences. The court heard that Charnley had engaged in inappropriate and illegal conduct involving a young girl, as well as possessing a significant collection of child pornography.
