EDINBURGH MAN GEORGE WILSON CAUGHT OUTSIDE EDINBURGH CASTLE BY PAEDOPHILE HUNTERS
In a disturbing case that unfolded in Edinburgh, a local father named George Wilson narrowly avoided imprisonment after attempting to meet a girl he believed to be only 13 years old outside the historic Edinburgh Castle. The incident, which took place in the heart of the city’s bustling center, was part of a sting operation conducted by the vigilant group Groom Resistors Scotland, aimed at catching adults seeking inappropriate contact with minors online.
Wilson, aged 34 and a father of one, had initiated contact with what he thought was a young girl named Sophie on an internet chat platform in 2019.
During their online exchanges, Wilson sent a series of sexually explicit messages, making lewd inquiries and comments that were intended to humiliate, distress, or alarm the recipient.
His online persona was registered under the username ‘Leith Guy,’ and he claimed to be 32 years old, residing in Edinburgh.
According to court records, Wilson continued communicating with the decoy even after being informed that the girl was only 13.
He asked her personal questions, including whether she was single, and requested photographs of her.
The conversations then moved to WhatsApp, where Wilson’s messages grew increasingly inappropriate.
Among the comments he sent were questions like “You got any hair?
You shave?”, “Have you ever play in bed?”, and “Is your bum little?” Additionally, he asked, “You want me to kiss you?” and complimented her appearance by saying, “You look sexy in yours [picture].” On August 9, 2019, Wilson and the decoy arranged to meet in Edinburgh’s city center, specifically near the iconic Edinburgh Castle at around noon.
Wilson described his appearance, stating he would be wearing blue Adidas All-star trainers.
Unbeknownst to him, members of Groom Resistors Scotland had arrived early, recognizing him by his distinctive footwear as he ascended the steps next to Camera Obscura.
The group, which had set up a fake online account to lure adults seeking to engage with minors, confronted Wilson during the planned meeting.
The entire encounter was live-streamed to over 3,000 viewers on the group’s Facebook page, capturing the moment Wilson was caught in the act.
Wilson was taken into custody and appeared before Edinburgh Sheriff Court, where he admitted to sending sexually explicit messages to a minor between July 29 and August 9, 2019.
During the hearing, the court heard that Wilson’s actions were part of a deliberate attempt to humiliate and distress the girl.
The prosecution highlighted that Wilson’s online activity was part of a pattern of inappropriate communication with a minor, which was ultimately thwarted by the vigilant efforts of the paedophile hunters.
In the subsequent sentencing, Sheriff Alistair Noble imposed a community payback order on Wilson.
He was also placed on the sex offenders register for a period of 18 months.
Furthermore, Wilson was subjected to a supervision order and prohibited from being in the company of children under 17, except for his own child.
The court also mandated that he must not delete any internet history and must surrender any electronic devices for inspection upon request.
Wilson’s background was briefly discussed in court, with reports indicating he resides in Restalrig, Edinburgh.
His defense attorney, Peter O’Neill, stated that this was Wilson’s first offense and indicated that mitigation would be reserved for the sentencing hearing.
The court’s decision reflects the seriousness of the offense, but also considers the circumstances of the case and Wilson’s previous record, or lack thereof.
Overall, this case underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement and community groups in Edinburgh to combat online child exploitation.
It also serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking on the internet and the importance of vigilance in protecting minors from predatory behavior.
