GEORGE THORNDYKE FROM WRITTLE SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT IN CHELMSFORD
In a case that has shocked the local community of Writtle and the surrounding Chelmsford area, George Thorndyke, a 78-year-old resident of Bruce Road in Writtle, was sentenced to prison for serious sexual offenses involving a young girl. The incident, which took place over a period spanning from September 2009 to September 2010, involved the victim, who was only four years old at the time of the assault.According to court proceedings, the young girl was unaware that what was happening to her was wrong, a detail that underscores the disturbing nature of the case. The victim later confided in a friend and a teacher, which prompted Thorndyke to surrender himself to the police. His confession was made voluntarily after the allegations came to light, and he did not attempt to deny his involvement.
During the hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court, a statement from the victim was read aloud. The young girl expressed her ongoing emotional distress, stating, "I will never forgive him for what he has done. I hate him. He makes me physically sick." Her words reflect the deep and lasting impact of the abuse she endured.
The court was informed that Thorndyke admitted to charges of indecently assaulting the girl and engaging in acts of indecency with her. The judge sentenced him to three years and two months in prison, emphasizing the severity of his actions. In addition to his jail term, Thorndyke was ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely, a measure designed to monitor his activities and prevent further harm.
Richard Conley, representing Thorndyke, acknowledged in court that the offenses should never have occurred and that the defendant accepted responsibility for his actions. The case has left a lasting scar on the community, highlighting the importance of vigilance and safeguarding vulnerable children from abuse.
