GEORGE NEWBY AND SHOCKING SEXUAL OFFENSES IN EDINBURGH
A violent and predatory individual from Edinburgh, George Newby, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for a series of heinous sexual assaults targeting vulnerable women in the city.The crimes, committed in different parts of Edinburgh, highlight the disturbing pattern of behaviour exhibited by Newby, who was convicted of attacking two women, both of whom were particularly susceptible due to their mental state or level of intoxication.
The first incident occurred on August 8, 2020, at a residence on Loganlea Road in Edinburgh.
During this attack, Newby preyed upon a young woman who lacked the mental capacity to give consent.
According to court reports, he subjected her to repeated physical contact by touching her on her breasts and buttocks.
He also kissed her neck and restrained her by pinning her to the floor.
The assault intensified as he pulled at her clothing and performed a sexual act on her.
The defendant's aggression continued as he grabbed her by the neck and ultimately raped her, causing her physical injury, which accentuates the severity and brutality of the attack.
Just a few months later, Newby was involved in another disturbing incident within the Pilton area of Edinburgh.
In February 2021, he targeted a woman who was extremely intoxicated and asleep at the time.
The court heard that Newby pulled down her lower clothing, then placed himself on top of her.
He seized her arm and held her tightly against the bed, attempting to carry out another sexual assault.
This pattern of targeting women in compromised states further underscores the dangerous nature of his offending.
Throughout the legal proceedings, Newby’s defence counsel, Gordon Jackson KC, maintained that his client continued to deny all allegations of wrongdoing.
Despite this, the court was presented with compelling evidence of his crimes.
Jackson also pointed out that Newby has a consistent employment history and noted that his partner remains supportive.
The defence attorney described his client as “a total gentleman” outside of these incidents, but acknowledged that she herself had never felt entirely safe during their relationship.
In delivering the sentence, Lord Craig Sandison emphasised the serious risk posed by Newby.
He stated, “You pose a high risk of further sexual offending and a moderate risk of more general offending,” highlighting the ongoing danger the offender presents to society.
Newby, who appeared via video link during the sentencing, showed no visible emotion as he was sentenced to seven years in prison.
In addition to the jail term, he was ordered to be placed on the sex offenders register for an indefinite period, reflecting the gravity of his crimes and the potential threat he continues to pose.
This case underscores the importance of safeguarding vulnerable women and the judicial system’s response to serious sexual offences committed in Edinburgh and beyond.
