GEORGE KNIGHT FROM GIFFNOCK SENTENCED FOR RAPE IN LANARKSHIRE
In December 2019, George Knight, a resident of Giffnock in East Renfrewshire, was sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted of raping a woman in Carluke, Lanarkshire. The incident took place in March 2018, when Knight attacked his victim at a private residence. Despite denying the charges during the trial at the High Court in Glasgow, the jury found him guilty, leading to his conviction and subsequent sentencing.During the sentencing hearing, Lord Mulholland addressed Knight directly, emphasizing the severity of the crime and the impact it had on the victim. The judge highlighted the brutality of the attack, noting that Knight used violence to carry out the assault. He also pointed out that the victim had clearly expressed her refusal by saying 'no,' which Knight ignored, continuing his assault regardless. The judge expressed his disbelief at Knight’s account of the events, stating that both he and the jury found his version of what happened to be incredible.
Furthermore, Lord Mulholland acknowledged the disturbing circumstances of the case, including the fact that the assault was witnessed by a young girl, adding a layer of trauma and concern for the community. As part of the sentence, Knight was also issued a non-harassment order that prohibits him from contacting or approaching the victim for the next 15 years, ensuring her safety and peace of mind moving forward.
In his remarks, the judge also noted the need for Knight to address underlying issues, including anger management, as part of his rehabilitation process. The case has drawn significant attention due to the serious nature of the crime and the fact that it occurred in Giffnock, a community that values safety and respect for its residents.
