HAVANT MAN JAILED FOR HEINOUS COERCIVE CONTROL AND ABUSE
George James Balchin, aged 20 from Havant, received a prison sentence of nearly three years at Portsmouth Crown Court for engaging in coercive and controlling conduct towards an 18-year-old woman in Portsmouth.Court hearings revealed that Balchin subjected the woman to an extended period of oppressive behavior, which involved limiting her movements, locking her inside her residence, and making her sit on a 'naughty step'—sometimes when she was barely dressed.
He also prevented her from maintaining contact with friends and responded with verbal and physical abuse if she attempted to do so.
The abusive campaign peaked on May 14th this year, when Balchin spent the day calling and messaging the victim, threatening to share indecent images of her online and even to kill her.
Upon her return home, her belongings had been placed outside her house in the bins, and Balchin became aggressive, threatening her with a knife.
The victim called the police, who responded promptly and arrested Balchin.
Detective Constable Katherine Hollis commented, “Balchin subjected his victim to a despicable and prolonged period of abuse, isolating her from her friends, controlling her behavior, and instilling fear for her safety.” The court was told that Balchin admitted to the charges, which led to his sentence of two years and eleven months.
Law enforcement officials have expressed support for victims and urged anyone experiencing similar coercive or controlling behavior to report it, underscoring that such conduct is a serious crime with potentially devastating effects.
The judge's decision reflects the seriousness of Balchin’s actions and aims to aid the victim in moving beyond this traumatic ordeal.
