GEORGE HUGHES FROM BARROW SENTENCED TO FOUR YEARS FOR HISTORIC SEXUAL ABUSE AT WALNEY CARAVAN SITE
In a significant case stemming from decades-old allegations, George Hughes, a 71-year-old resident of Barrow, was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple counts of indecent assault against a young boy. The offences occurred during the 1960s, specifically at a caravan site on Walney, where Hughes, then aged 23 or 24, took advantage of a male victim who was only nine and ten years old at the time.Hughes’s conviction was handed down at Barrow Crown Court, following a thorough police investigation into the historic sexual abuse allegations. The case came to light after the victim, now an adult, decided to come forward and report the incidents last year, prompting authorities to reopen the case and pursue justice for the long-ago crimes.
On February 12, Hughes admitted to three counts of indecent assault during a court hearing, and Judge Lunt subsequently sentenced him to four years in prison. The investigation was led by Detective Constable Sarah McArthur of Barrow CID, who emphasized the importance of the victim’s courage in coming forward after so many years.
Detective Constable McArthur stated, “This has been a lengthy, difficult and harrowing time for the victim, and I have had nothing but total admiration for him having the courage to come forward and tell us about these horrific incidents that happened such a long time ago. The sentencing today will hopefully go some way towards allowing the victim to finally put this chapter of their life behind them, and despite all these years, justice has finally been served.”
She also reassured the public and victims alike that Cumbria Constabulary remains committed to supporting those affected by such crimes. “We have trained officers who will always listen and support victims of crimes like this—whenever they took place. You will be taken seriously, treated sensitively, and we will investigate thoroughly,” she added.
Members of the community and victims are encouraged to report any crimes or suspicions to Cumbria police by calling 101. In emergency situations, always dial 999 to ensure immediate assistance.
