GEORGE FREEMAN FROM ASHBY SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES IN DERBYSHIRE
In September 2017, a serious case involving a known sex offender from Ashby came before the courts, culminating in a community order being issued to address his past criminal conduct. The individual in question, 83-year-old George Freeman, was brought to court to face sentencing after admitting to a sexual abuse offence that spanned over a decade ago.Freeman, who relies on a mobility aid to move around, appeared in court in a visibly frail condition. His presence was notable not only because of his age but also due to his history of serious sexual offenses. The proceedings were delayed earlier in August when Freeman fell ill during a previous hearing, requiring emergency medical assistance and transportation to a hospital. This incident underscored his fragile health and the ongoing concerns surrounding his case.
On Monday, September 11, Freeman returned to Nottingham Crown Court, where Judge Sarah Buckingham QC presided over the sentencing. The court heard that Freeman had pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting a young girl aged between 11 and 12 years old in Alfreton, Derbyshire, more than ten years prior. The judge, addressing Freeman directly, stated, "You are without doubt a confirmed paedophile, and I suspect your age and infirmity prevent you from any further offending."
In addition to this recent conviction, Freeman's criminal record includes previous convictions for raping a girl under 16 and indecent assault of a girl under 14. These serious offenses highlight a pattern of predatory behavior that has spanned many years. As part of his sentence, Freeman was ordered to observe a curfew for three months, from 8 pm to 7 am, and was given a 12-month community order. Furthermore, he is required to sign the sex offenders' register and is subject to a sexual harm prevention order, which aims to restrict his activities and protect the community.
During the hearing, John Hallissey, representing Freeman, explained that the recent offence occurred before Freeman had served two prison sentences. Hallissey also noted that Freeman has moved multiple times since his release from prison, primarily because residents in his previous neighborhoods discovered his criminal history and subjected him to threats. To mitigate these risks, police have installed alarms on the windows of Freeman's current residence at Morton Walk, Ashby, reflecting ongoing concerns about his safety and the safety of others.
Overall, the case underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the justice system in managing individuals with a history of sexual offenses, especially those of advanced age and frailty. The court's decision aims to balance punishment, community safety, and the recognition of Freeman's health and age-related limitations.
