GEORGE CROMBIE'S SHOCKING CRIMES IN DUBLIN REVEALED
In October 2018, a disturbing case involving a Dublin man named George Crombie, aged 49, came to public attention as he was released from prison after serving a sentence for heinous crimes committed against his stepdaughter.Crombie, who resided on Bloomfield Avenue in the South Circular Road area of Dublin 8, had been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison in November 2016 following a series of grave sexual offenses.
His criminal history was marked by a particularly disturbing incident where he forcibly placed a dog lead around his young stepdaughter’s neck while subjecting her to sexual abuse.
During this assault, Crombie also had a knife tucked into the waistband of his pyjamas, adding a layer of threat and intimidation to his actions.
The abuse spanned over a three-year period, beginning when the girl was just 10 years old and continuing until she was 13.
Crombie’s threats to silence her were explicit; he warned her that there would be “murder in this flat” if she confided in her mother about what was happening.
Last week, the victim, now in her twenties and known as Laura Johnston, bravely read her victim impact statement in court.
She condemned Crombie for betraying her trust and love, expressing her profound pain and confusion.
Ms Johnston questioned how she could ever recover from the trauma inflicted by someone she once loved and trusted as her stepfather.
She chose to waive her right to anonymity to ensure her voice was heard.
The court proceedings revealed that Crombie pleaded guilty to eight counts of sexual assault against Ms Johnston, which took place in their home in Ringsend, Dublin, between February 2004 and December 2006.
The judge, Melanie Greally, described the nature of the assaults as satisfying a particular sexual fetish, with the use of the dog lead being described as “extremely frightening” and “degrading.” Judge Greally emphasized the profound breach of trust, noting that Ms Johnston had regarded Crombie as her biological father until she was 10 years old, when her mother revealed he was actually her stepfather.
In a show of support, Ms Johnston tore up her birth certificate, which stated he was not her biological father.
However, shortly after learning this truth, Crombie’s behavior towards her changed dramatically.
He began questioning her about her friends and boys, and eventually started entering her bedroom when her mother and siblings were asleep.
During these late-night visits, he would touch her inappropriately—her stomach, legs, and bottom—while she lay in bed.
The court heard that Crombie appeared to have a fetish for stomachs and bottoms, and that these assaults became as routine as clockwork every Thursday and Saturday night, often after he had been drinking.
The abuse ceased after the incident involving the dog lead, and soon after, Crombie’s relationship with Ms Johnston’s mother ended.
Ms Johnston confided in her mother, who arranged counseling for her, and she later reported the abuse to the Gardaí in 2015.
She expressed to the court that her experiences had severely impacted her relationships with her siblings, who struggled to accept the truth of what their sister endured.
During police interviews, Crombie admitted fully to the allegations.
His criminal record includes seven previous convictions for road traffic offenses and larceny.
Despite his admissions, the court recognized the gravity of his crimes and the lasting damage inflicted upon his victim.
The judge sentenced Crombie to concurrent terms totaling two and a half years, acknowledging his remorse and cooperation in the case.
