GEORGE BURNETT FROM HELENSBURGH ADDED TO SEX OFFENDERS REGISTER AFTER CHILD GROPING INCIDENT
In December 2012, a pensioner from Helensburgh was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register following an incident involving a child in a local ice-cream shop.
George Burnett, a 70-year-old resident of Rosneath Drive, was found guilty of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl at Dino’s Radio Cafe on West Clyde Street.
He admitted to groping her by placing his hand on her behind and handling her buttocks.
The incident occurred on July 19, when Burnett approached the girl while she was queuing to buy ice-cream, with her mother waiting outside.
The court heard that Burnett has a previous conviction related to a similar offense.
During the hearing, Roddy Boag, defending Burnett, stated: “The accused was under a degree of supervision.
A custodial sentence may not solve the issue which Mr Burnett may be creating for himself but above all for the public.” Dumbarton Sheriff Court sentenced Burnett to a community payback order that requires him to be under supervision for three years and complete 120 hours of unpaid work.
Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for five years and was issued a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which prohibits him from having any contact with children under 16.
