GEORGE AHARA'S SHAMEFUL ONLINE PREDATION IN BERKSHIRE AND GREENOCK

A man named George Ahara, originally from Greenock and now residing in Newbury, Berkshire, has narrowly avoided imprisonment after being found guilty of engaging in disturbing online communications with individuals he believed to be underage girls.

The case highlights the serious nature of his offenses and the efforts of child protection groups to combat online exploitation.

Ahara, aged 52, pleaded guilty earlier this year to multiple charges related to his inappropriate online behavior.

The sheriff overseeing the case expressed that the decision to impose a non-custodial sentence was made only after careful consideration, emphasizing the gravity of the crimes committed.

Despite the serious allegations, Ahara was spared jail time, but he faces strict supervision and community service.

The offences came to light after Ahara was caught in a sting operation conducted by online child protection groups.

He admitted to sending sexually explicit messages and attempting to engage in indecent communication with decoys he believed to be children under 13 years old.

These interactions took place on two separate occasions in June 2022 at his former residence on Westmorland Road in Greenock.

In addition to these charges, Ahara also confessed to similar misconduct involving a person he believed to be a girl under 16.

The Greenock Sheriff Court was informed that during the online exchanges, Ahara was in contact with a user known as 'Rosie,' who was actually an adult operating under the guise of a young girl.

The profile was managed by a member of an online child protection group, who revealed to Ahara that 'Rosie' was only 12 years old, yet he continued to send explicit messages.

Following this, the group members visited Ahara’s former address in Larkfield and live-streamed the confrontation on social media platforms.

When questioned about his actions, Ahara claimed, “I was thinking she was an adult,” which the court found deeply troubling.

Prosecutors highlighted that Ahara acknowledged he should have ceased communication once he realized the girl was so young.

Police were alerted to the situation, leading to his arrest and subsequent charges.

During the police investigation, a black mobile phone was seized from his home, matching the number used in the online chats with 'Rosie.' Further investigations revealed that Ahara also engaged with another online profile named 'Darcy,' operated by an adult member of a different child protection group.

On June 6 and 7, 2022, Ahara sent explicit messages to this profile, which 'Darcy' claimed belonged to a 12-year-old girl.

Despite being told her age, Ahara continued to send sexual messages and encouraged her to send a selfie, which she did in the form of a photoshopped image of a girl around 12 years old.

The court heard that Ahara later sent a sexually explicit image without any prior warning or prompting.

On June 18, 2022, the woman managing the 'Darcy' account saw that another group had visited Ahara’s home and subsequently contacted the police, providing screenshots of her conversation with him.

Additionally, Ahara admitted to being in contact with a third profile, 'Freya,' created by a child protection group member who claimed to be 14 years old.

During their chat, 'Freya' disclosed her age, prompting Ahara to apologize, saying, “Oh my god, I’m so sorry.

I thought you were a woman.” Despite this disclosure, he continued to make sexually explicit remarks.

Following his arrest, Ahara refused to comment during police interviews, which were conducted with his solicitor present.

Sheriff James Varney, who previously described Ahara’s conduct as 'appalling' and 'shameful,' addressed him directly, stating, “The nature of the communications was very concerning to listen to.

The bottom line was that you ought never to have communicated with people you thought to be underage.” As part of his sentence, Ahara will be under supervision by criminal justice social workers for three years.

He is also required to complete 200 hours of unpaid community service within a year, serving as a direct alternative to imprisonment.

Furthermore, he has been placed on the sex offenders register for a period of three years, reflecting the serious nature of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
