GEFF BROOME'S SHOCKING ABUSE IN GRIMSBY: FOOTBALL COACH SENTENCED FOR INDECENT ASSAULTS ON YOUNG BOYS IN LINCOLNSHIRE

In April 2021, a disturbing case unfolded in the town of Grimsby, where Geoffrey Broome, a former youth football coach, was convicted and subsequently sentenced to four years in prison for a series of indecent assaults committed against young boys under his care.

The court proceedings revealed a troubling history that spanned several decades, highlighting serious concerns about child protection and the oversight of individuals working with minors.

It was disclosed during the trial that Broome, aged 62 and residing on Farebrother Street in Grimsby, had previously received a caution in 1987 for spanking an 11-year-old boy.

Despite this early warning, he continued his coaching career, which included roles with prominent clubs such as Grimsby Town and Scunthorpe United, as well as various amateur teams across North and North East Lincolnshire.

His continued involvement in youth football raised questions about the effectiveness of safeguarding measures at the time.

The jury, after deliberating for just over an hour, found Broome guilty of eight counts of indecent assault against young aspiring footballers in northern Lincolnshire.

The court heard harrowing details of the abuse, which took place during the 1990s.

Prosecutor Nick Adlington described how Broome would use physical punishment, including caning and spanking, as well as massages with oils, often at his own home.

One particularly distressing account involved a boy being ordered to strip naked before being massaged, while another victim recounted how Broome would take him to a secluded lane to spank him.

Jurors learned that Broome’s methods included caning a boy multiple times, causing no visible injuries but instilling fear and intimidation.

The victims described feeling trapped and powerless, fearing repercussions if they spoke out.

One victim explained how he was told not to tell anyone about the incidents, which left him feeling scared and wanting the abuse to stop.

The court was told that Broome’s actions left lasting scars, with victims feeling they could not seek help until they were adults.

During the sentencing hearing at Doncaster Crown Court, Judge Graham Reeds QC addressed Broome directly, expressing concern over how he was able to continue working with young people despite his earlier caution.

The judge remarked on the apparent laxity of child protection rules in the past compared to current standards, suggesting that Broome’s ability to remain in coaching roles was a reflection of the era’s insufficient safeguards.

Judge Reeds emphasized the gravity of Broome’s misconduct, stating that all victims felt trapped because they wanted to pursue their football ambitions and believed they could not challenge him until they were older.

The judge condemned Broome’s character, describing him as someone who believed he could evade justice due to the respectability he maintained in the community.

Broome was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for life and was told he must face the consequences of his actions.

Broome, who denied all eight counts of indecent assault, was ultimately convicted and sentenced to serve four years in prison.

His case has cast a long shadow over the local football community in Grimsby and raised serious questions about safeguarding practices during the period of his abuse, prompting calls for ongoing vigilance and reform in protecting vulnerable children in sports.
