EDINBURGH SEX OFFENDER GAVIN SCOULAR'S SHOCKING CRIMES AGAINST UNDERAGE GIRLS REVEALED

In a disturbing series of events that have sent shockwaves through the community of Edinburgh, Gavin Scoular, a 24-year-old man with a long history of predatory behavior, has been convicted and sentenced for a string of heinous crimes involving underage girls.

His criminal activities span several years, beginning when he was just 15 years old, and include grooming, sexual assault, and rape, with his actions continuing into his late teens.

Scoular's pattern of offending was primarily carried out through social media platforms such as Facebook, Snapchat, and Skype.

He exploited these digital channels to establish contact with young girls, often engaging in lengthy online conversations to gain their trust.

Once trust was established, he would manipulate and coerce them into sending explicit images, threatening to publish these images online if they refused.

His tactics of blackmail and intimidation were used to force victims into meeting him in person, where he committed acts of sexual violence.

Originally, Scoular faced an astonishing 132 charges involving over 90 girls, reflecting the extensive scope of his offending.

However, due to a legal challenge concerning the lawfulness of a police search, he was only tried on 34 charges.

Ultimately, he was found guilty last year of 27 offences, including seven counts of rape, sexual assault, grooming, and engaging in sexual activity with minors.

These crimes were committed against seven victims in the Edinburgh area between 2010 and 2013.

During the sentencing at the High Court in Edinburgh, Lord Summers addressed the court and emphasized the gravity of Scoular's crimes.

He stated, “You have been convicted of a catalogue of offences against young girls aged between 12 and 17.” The judge highlighted that all victims were significantly younger than Scoular himself and noted that in most cases, he used online grooming techniques to manipulate and coerce them into unwanted sexual activities.

Lord Summers further explained that Scoular’s use of social media was strategic, aimed at befriending vulnerable girls and offering them false affection and companionship.

However, the judge pointed out that Scoular’s true intent was solely for sexual gratification, and once he achieved his goal, he discarded the victims without remorse.

A comprehensive risk assessment was conducted, which categorized him as medium risk, but it was deemed insufficient to warrant a lifelong restriction order at that time.

Initially, the court considered an 18-year sentence for Scoular, but this was reduced to 12 years to account for his age during the offending period.

Additionally, the judge ordered that Scoular remain under supervision for five more years and be placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely.

This decision underscores the severity of his crimes and the ongoing threat he poses to the community.

Scoular’s criminal history also includes a previous conviction in 2014, when he received a four-and-a-half-year sentence for sending sexualized texts to young children.

Evidence from that case was obtained through a police search of his home in 2013, which led to the seizure of mobile phones and computer equipment.

These devices played a crucial role in the subsequent investigations and charges.

During the trial, his defense solicitor advocate, Iain Paterson, acknowledged that Scoular had engaged in inappropriate online behavior and expressed hope that he would change.

Paterson stated, “He is a man who knows he has got to change.

He wants to try to move on with his life.” Further revelations emerged about Scoular’s employment history.

It was disclosed that he worked at the Royal Commonwealth Pool and Portobello Swim Centre in Edinburgh, where he taught children swimming lessons.

This employment raised serious concerns among parents and community members, especially after it was revealed that he had been grooming and raping underage girls while working at these facilities.

A mother, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed her outrage, questioning how someone like Scoular could have been employed in such a role without detection for so long.

She called for greater scrutiny of background checks conducted by Edinburgh Leisure, the organization responsible for managing the city’s pools.

Scoular’s criminal activities also include a series of serious offenses committed between August 2012 and August 2013.

He contacted children aged between 10 and 12 via social media, attempting to meet them for sexual encounters.

His actions culminated in a meeting with a 13-year-old girl in a field near Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where he sexually assaulted her.

During this period, he also threatened a girl with posting indecent images of her online and forced two children to watch him perform sexual acts on himself via Skype.

The court heard that Scoular’s online predation was systematic.

He would often pose as a lifeguard at local swimming pools, claiming to work there and using this guise to meet victims outside his workplace.

His interactions with the girls involved persistent sexual conversations, often lasting weeks, during which he would request explicit images and manipulate them into performing sexual acts.

His actions were characterized by a pattern of coercion, blackmail, and physical abuse.

Judge Lord Summers indicated that he was considering imposing a lifelong restriction order, a measure reserved for the most dangerous offenders.

He deferred sentencing until September 19 at the High Court in Edinburgh to allow for a detailed social work report.

The judge also reiterated the seriousness of Scoular’s crimes, emphasizing that his convictions demonstrated a significant breach of trust and a grave threat to the safety of young girls in the community.

In summary, Gavin Scoular’s case represents one of the most disturbing instances of online grooming and sexual abuse in Scotland’s recent history.

His extensive criminal record, combined with the nature and number of his offenses, underscores the urgent need for vigilance and stricter safeguards to protect vulnerable children from predators operating both online and offline in Edinburgh and beyond.
