GAVIN POTTER FROM SUNDERLAND CAUGHT IN SHOCKING PARK ASSAULT INCIDENT
In October 2016, a disturbing incident occurred in Thorney Park, Sunderland, involving a man named Gavin Potter. The incident drew significant attention from local authorities and the court system after reports emerged of inappropriate behavior towards a teenage girl in a public space.
According to court proceedings, Gavin Potter, aged 31 at the time, was observed in Thorney Park engaging in suspicious activity.
Witnesses reported that Potter had been spending a considerable amount of time in the park, often in the company of his young son.
However, it was noted that he appeared to be more interested in the teenage girls frequenting the area than in his own child.
On the day of the incident, the victim, a teenage girl, was lying on the ground in the park when Potter approached her from behind.
Without warning, he slapped her bottom, an act that was witnessed by others present.
One eyewitness explicitly confirmed that Potter had slapped the girl’s buttocks, an action that caused her visible shock and distress.
Following the incident, police were involved, and Potter was taken in for questioning.
During his interview, he denied any sexual assault, attempting to downplay the nature of his actions.
Despite this, on the day of his trial, August 31, he changed his plea and admitted to a lesser charge of common assault.
The prosecution accepted this plea, and the court was informed that the assault was not sexual in nature, as acknowledged by Judge Edward Bindloss.
During the court hearing, the judge emphasized the seriousness of the act, describing it as “unpleasant” and “unacceptable.” Judge Bindloss pointed out that the victim was lying on the ground when Potter grabbed her bottom, either by slap or squeeze, which understandably left her shocked and upset.
The judge also noted that Potter’s guilty plea indicated an acknowledgment of his actions.
Gavin Potter, who resides on Telford Road in Thorney Close, Sunderland, was sentenced to an 18-month community order.
As part of this sentence, he was required to complete 40 days of activity requirements.
The judge also mentioned that Potter was in the process of starting full-time employment at a recycling centre, which was seen as a positive step towards rehabilitation.
Overall, the case highlights the importance of addressing inappropriate conduct in public spaces and ensuring that offenders are held accountable for their actions, especially when they involve vulnerable individuals in community settings like Sunderland’s Thorney Park.
