GARY WATSON PREDATORY PAEDOPHILE FROM YORK SENTENCED TO NINE YEARS FOR ABUSE OF THREE GIRLS
In December 2015, a disturbing case involving Gary Watson, a man from York, culminated in his conviction for a series of heinous crimes against three young girls.Watson, who had previously been known as a youth rugby league coach and a chocolate factory worker, was found guilty of multiple charges related to the sexual abuse of minors, with the abuse spanning over two decades.
Watson’s criminal actions first came to light after one of the victims, a young girl, confided in a teacher about the abuse she had endured.
This disclosure prompted a police investigation that ultimately led to Watson’s arrest.
During the nine-day trial at York Crown Court, the jury heard harrowing details of the abuse, which began when one girl was just nine years old and another was eleven.
The youngest victim, a five-year-old girl, was subjected to indecent acts by Watson, who was convicted of indecency with a child, along with five counts of sexual assault, seven charges of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and one count of sexual activity with a child.
Throughout the proceedings, Watson maintained his innocence, attempting to deny the allegations and even trying to discredit his victims by attacking their characters.
Despite his efforts, the jury took only two hours to reach a verdict, finding him guilty on all but one charge.
Watson showed no visible reaction to the verdicts as they were read out.
Judge Paul Batty QC, presiding over the case, delivered a stern condemnation of Watson’s actions, describing him as a “predatory abuser” with a “dark side” who had inflicted lasting damage on his victims.
The judge also addressed Watson’s family, stating that they should “hang their heads in shame” for their behavior towards the victims and criticizing their attempts to support Watson while dismissing the bravery of the children who had come forward.
In sentencing Watson, the judge imposed a nine-year prison term and placed him under a lifelong sexual harm prevention order.
This order prohibits him from contacting or residing with any girl under the age of 16 without explicit approval from social services.
Additionally, Watson was registered on the sex offenders’ register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
Detective Constable John Atkinson of the York Serious Crime Team, who led the investigation, praised the victims for their courage and resilience.
He emphasized that beneath Watson’s outwardly respectable facade was a “vile” predator whose crimes only came to light because of the victims’ bravery in speaking out.
The detective also expressed disappointment that Watson subjected his victims to further suffering by falsely claiming innocence and delaying justice, which caused additional anguish for the victims during the trial process.
Overall, this case highlights the importance of vigilance and support for victims of abuse, as well as the relentless pursuit of justice against those who commit such heinous acts.
