LEICESTER MAN GARY (TOMMY) SMITH CONVICTED OF RAPE JUST WEEKS BEFORE 13TH BIRTHDAY
In a case that has shocked the community of Leicester, a 49-year-old man named Gary Smith, commonly known as Tommy, has been found guilty of heinous crimes involving a young girl just weeks shy of her 13th birthday. The conviction follows a detailed trial that concluded at Leicester Crown Court, where the evidence against Smith was deemed overwhelming.
According to reports from Leicestershire Police, Smith, who resides on Imperial Avenue in the Braunstone area of Leicester, was convicted on two counts of raping a child under the age of 13.
The case revealed a disturbing pattern of manipulation and exploitation by Smith, who targeted the young victim during a vulnerable period of her life.
Prosecutors detailed how Smith engaged in grooming behaviors, encouraging the girl to send him indecent photographs of herself.
In an apparent attempt to silence her and prevent her from revealing the abuse, Smith also bought her gifts, a tactic often used by predators to establish control and foster secrecy.
Despite Smith’s denial of the allegations, the court found sufficient evidence to convict him of the serious charges.
Detective Constable Jim Muzzell, the lead investigator in the case, described the ordeal as “horrific,” emphasizing that the abuse took place when the victim was only 12 years old.
He explained that Smith exploited situations where they would be alone, taking advantage of her innocence and trust to carry out his criminal acts.
Muzzell also highlighted the manipulative tactics used by Smith, including encouraging the girl to send indecent images and buying her presents to discourage her from speaking out.
Smith’s sentencing is scheduled to take place at Leicester Crown Court on Wednesday, July 4.
The case has brought to light the dangers of grooming and exploitation, underscoring the importance of vigilance and protective measures for vulnerable children in Leicester and beyond.
