GARY PATON OF DUNFERMLINE SENTENCED FOR YEARS OF ABUSE AND THREATS AGAINST EX-PARTNER
A man from Dunfermline, Gary Paton, has been convicted and sentenced for a prolonged period of abusive behavior towards his former partner, spanning over five years. The disturbing series of incidents included threats, physical aggression, and intimidation, culminating in a confrontation at her home with a baseball bat.
Paton, aged 35 and residing on Wedderburn Street in Dunfermline, admitted to engaging in a pattern of conduct that caused significant fear and distress to his ex-partner.
His actions ranged from emotional threats to physical assaults, including an incident where he pulled the handbrake of a vehicle she was driving and opened the passenger door, forcing her to make an emergency stop amidst moving traffic.
Such behavior demonstrated a reckless disregard for her safety and well-being.
Throughout the period from January 1, 2015, to April 1, 2019, Paton’s conduct was characterized by shouting, swearing, and repeated physical violence, such as punching a door.
He also issued threats to take his own life, adding a layer of emotional manipulation and distress to the ongoing abuse.
These incidents occurred at various locations within the Dunfermline area, highlighting a pattern of persistent harassment.
Following this, between April 1, 2019, and January 18, 2020, Paton continued his abusive behavior.
Court documents detailed how he pursued his former partner, physically seized her by the body, and threatened suicide.
He also took her phone and threw it against a wall, further demonstrating his controlling and aggressive tendencies.
His harassment extended to constant phone calls and text messages, and he even attended her residence with a baseball bat, refusing to leave when asked.
Additionally, he demanded that her friends leave her address, intensifying the sense of intimidation and control.
It was noted that these acts of abuse were aggravated by the involvement of a child, adding a serious dimension to his misconduct.
Paton’s behavior was further characterized by his refusal to cease his harassment despite repeated requests, and his actions caused considerable emotional harm to his former partner.
Paton appeared before Dunfermline Sheriff Court for sentencing after previously pleading guilty to the charges.
Sheriff Charles Macnair addressed him directly, stating, “You engaged in a course of criminal conduct and abuse of your former partner for a period of about five years.
That not only impacted on her but it also involved a child, certainly since 2019.
There were multiple incidents and it is only after very considerable hesitation that I consider I am able to consider an alternative to custody but if you breach this order, then you can expect a custodial sentence.” As part of his sentence, Paton was ordered to complete 300 hours of unpaid work and placed under supervision for three years.
During this period, he is required to participate in the Caledonian programme aimed at addressing domestic abuse behaviors.
His legal representative, Stephen Morrison, highlighted that a social work report indicated Paton’s insight into his offending was “relatively good” and that he has already made positive changes, including ceasing steroid use.
Morrison expressed that Paton is willing to engage fully with the programme to work on his issues and prevent future offending.
