GARY NEWMAN OF PINSTON SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABDUCTION AND SEXUAL OFFENCES IN DERBYSHIRE AND WOLVERHAMPTON

In a series of disturbing criminal acts spanning several years, Gary Newman, a 53-year-old man from Pinxton, has been at the center of multiple serious allegations involving child abuse, indecent images, and attempted abduction. His criminal history and recent court proceedings reveal a pattern of predatory behavior that has left a lasting impact on his victims and the community alike.

Back in December 2010, Newman was sentenced to a substantial 12-year prison term after being convicted of sexually assaulting two young girls and possessing indecent images of children on his computer. The first victim, who is now in her 30s, was just six or seven years old when Newman abused her during the 1980s. The second victim, aged nine at the time, was assaulted in September 2006. The case came to light in 2008 when the second girl confided in her grandmother, who then reported the matter to the police. This revelation prompted an investigation that uncovered Newman’s disturbing interest in young girls, which had remained hidden for years.

During the trial at Derby Crown Court, Newman initially denied the allegations, forcing his victims to testify against him. However, at the last minute, he admitted to the offenses, which included sexual assault and the possession of indecent images. The judge described his actions as “calculated” and “sordid,” emphasizing the calculated nature of his predatory behavior. Police investigations revealed that Newman’s computer contained 33 indecent images of children, ranging from Category One to Category Four, with Category Five being the most graphic. Newman claimed that he was searching for adult pornography when the images appeared and that he deleted them immediately, but prosecutors dismissed this explanation, citing the use of search terms like “kiddy” and “paedo” as evidence of intent.

In February 2011, Newman was convicted by a jury on multiple charges, including two counts of sexual assault of a child under 13 and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, involving his second victim. Later that year, in November, he faced additional convictions for offenses against his first victim, including indecent assault and indecency with a child. Throughout the proceedings, Newman’s remorse appeared limited, although his legal representatives noted that he had admitted the offenses to a probation officer, becoming tearful and expressing shame for his actions.

Following his convictions, Newman was ordered to register as a sex offender and was disqualified from working with children for life. He was also subjected to a sexual offenders’ prevention order upon release from prison. Despite his incarceration, Newman’s criminal activities extended beyond sexual offenses. In 2010, just three days before his arrest, he broke a court order that prohibited him from removing his infant daughter from the UK. Newman booked his wife, Christine, and their one-year-old daughter on a flight to the Philippines, an act that led to an 18-month sentence for child abduction at Wolverhampton Crown Court. Newman admitted to texting and meeting his wife in violation of the court order, and he acknowledged writing letters advising Christine on what to do if he was imprisoned, although he claimed she never saw these letters.

Throughout the legal proceedings, the victims and their families expressed a mixture of relief and guilt. The first victim, who chose to remain anonymous for legal reasons, shared her feelings of regret for not coming forward sooner, believing that earlier reporting might have prevented further abuse. She also revealed the lasting trauma and mistrust she now experiences towards men and her own ability to care for her children. The mother of Newman’s second victim described her daughter’s distress upon revealing the abuse, recounting her hysterical reactions and fears that Newman would harm her. She expressed devastation over the impact on her family’s life and the emotional scars left behind.

Detective Constable Chris Yapp, who led the investigation, highlighted Newman’s callousness, noting that his denial of the offenses until the very end underscored his lack of remorse. The case remains a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals with a history of abusing children and the importance of vigilant law enforcement and community awareness in protecting vulnerable victims.
