Middlewich Rapist
In March 2016, a disturbing case unfolded involving Gary Macey, a 27-year-old man from Hayhurst Avenue in Middlewich, who was convicted of a series of heinous crimes against a young girl from Northwich. The court proceedings revealed the extent of Macey's predatory behavior, which included grooming, sexual assault, and online harassment, all of which had devastating consequences for the victim.

Gary Macey appeared before Warrington Crown Court on Wednesday, March 23, where he was sentenced to a total of ten years in prison for committing 14 separate offenses. These charges encompassed sexual activity with a minor, possession of indecent images of children, and acts of bestiality. The court determined that Macey would serve four and a half years of his sentence behind bars, with the remaining period to be served outside of prison under strict supervision, known as 'licence.'

The court heard harrowing details of how Macey systematically groomed the 13-year-old girl online, building a relationship that quickly turned abusive. In 2014, he engaged in sexual acts with her on multiple occasions. When the girl refused to continue, Macey resorted to threats of rape and humiliation, including posting a naked photograph of her on the internet. Additionally, he created a fake Facebook profile in her name and posted sexual statuses, further tormenting her and attempting to manipulate her.

The victim’s mother, who has since left her employment to care for her daughter, read a statement in court describing the profound impact of Macey’s actions. She explained that before the incident, her daughter was a confident and popular 13-year-old, excelling academically and socially. However, after the grooming and abuse, her daughter became fearful of attending school, often distressed and needing to be collected by her mother. The girl began self-harming, attempting suicide through overdoses, and lost interest in her hobbies. She refused to leave the house and insisted on having locks and bolts installed on the doors, fearing Macey’s revenge for speaking out. The mother concluded her statement by saying, “From what Gary Macey has done, my daughter is serving a life sentence.”

By October 2014, the trauma had taken a severe toll on the girl’s mental health, leading to her being admitted to Leighton Hospital’s mental health unit, where she remained until May 2015. She was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression. Her condition persisted with multiple suicide attempts, and she began hearing voices, indicating ongoing psychological distress.

The court also heard that Macey targeted three other girls under the age of 16 via Facebook. One of these girls was threatened with violence, specifically being told he would ‘pour acid over her face,’ after she refused to send indecent images and called him ‘ugly.’

Judge Nicholas Woodward expressed his condemnation of Macey’s actions, emphasizing the profound and lasting damage inflicted on the young victim. He stated, “It has had quite a devastating effect on an otherwise healthy and stable young girl. Because of your actions, she has had a complete breakdown and made a serious attempt to take her own life.”
