GARY DOBSON FROM WIGAN SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AND GROOMING PLOT
In a case that has shocked the community of Wigan, Gary Dobson, a 48-year-old resident of Aspull, has been sentenced to serve time in prison following his conviction on serious charges related to child exploitation and indecent images. The incident came to light after Dobson was caught in a sting operation conducted by vigilant paedophile hunters, who managed to trap him during an online grooming attempt.
According to court proceedings, Dobson was found guilty of creating and possessing indecent images of children, with his computer containing a stash of such material.
The images were classified into categories A and B, with Category A representing the most severe form of illegal content under law.
The police investigation was initiated after Dobson was caught attempting to meet what he believed was a 15-year-old girl he had been communicating with online.
In reality, the girl was an undercover operative working with paedophile hunters, who reported the incident to law enforcement authorities.
Authorities executed a raid on Dobson’s residence in March 2018, leading to his arrest.
During the subsequent analysis of his laptop, investigators uncovered a disturbing collection of child sexual abuse images.
The court heard that Dobson had engaged in online grooming, attempting to arrange a physical meeting with the supposed minor.
He pleaded guilty to the charge of attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming, which resulted in a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.
However, he denied the charges related to the possession of indecent images.
Representing himself during the trial, Dobson challenged police claims that he had explicitly requested to meet the girl during conversations on the messaging app KIK.
Despite his objections, the court found him guilty of the charges after careful deliberation.
He was sentenced to six months in prison for each of the two indecent image charges, with the sentences to run consecutively, effectively adding up to a total of one year behind bars.
In addition to his prison sentence, Dobson was ordered to comply with a series of court-ordered conditions.
These include signing the Sex Offenders’ Register for a period of ten years, completing a 40-day rehabilitation program, performing 150 hours of unpaid community service, and paying a victim surcharge of £115 along with prosecution costs amounting to £620.
It was noted that Dobson had also pleaded guilty to a separate charge of cannabis possession, but no additional penalty was imposed for this offense.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about online grooming and the importance of vigilant law enforcement efforts to combat child exploitation.
The community of Wigan is urged to remain alert and report any suspicious activity to authorities to help protect vulnerable children from harm.
