GARY COOK AND SHOCKING SEXUAL ASSAULT IN MANCHESTER
A mother from Manchester has openly expressed her deep anguish and emotional pain following the traumatic experience of her young daughter being groomed and sexually assaulted by a man identified as Gary Cook.Gary Cook, aged 37 and residing in Oldham, was brought before Minshull Street Crown Court where he received a prison sentence of five years after being convicted of sexually assaulting the girl in March of the previous year.
The conviction stems from a disturbing incident where Cook had removed part of the victim’s clothing and committed sexual assault against her.
Additionally, it was revealed that Cook had installed a monitoring app on a device used by the girl, ostensibly to keep track of her activities, which further exemplifies the predatory nature of his actions.
Following the sentencing, the girl’s mother spoke to the Manchester Evening News, describing how Cook’s actions have irrevocably damaged her daughter’s innocence.
She conveyed her feelings of devastation, stating that her family is now left with a lifelong burden of trauma.
She explained, “My daughter is completely changed, it’s absolutely devastating.
The whole time he was on bail was unbearable.
Now everything has changed for her.” The mother expressed her heartbreak over how the assault has affected her child’s emotional and psychological well-being.
She emphasized the ongoing pain and anger she feels, saying, “The whole thing has been incredibly upsetting for her.
I just have total anger.
I can’t believe it.
He has taken my daughter’s innocence away from her.
She is getting a bit older now, and it is becoming more obvious what he did to her.” Gary Cook, who was described as having no fixed abode at the time of sentencing, was sentenced to serve five years in custody.
However, he is set to serve only half of that period before being released on licence.
The court also imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which will restrict Cook’s activities for ten years.
The victim’s mother added her dismay over the leniency of the sentence, expressing that she felt no punishment could truly compensate for the harm inflicted.
“I don’t think any sentence would have been enough.
I feel like five years would have been adequate if it were the full amount, but we found out he will only serve half of the sentence, which is a kick in the teeth for us,” she said.
“We are deeply worried that he will only serve about half his time.
It’s such a serious offence.
It has been a life-changing experience.
We have to live with this for the rest of our lives.” In addition to his prison sentence, Cook was issued a restraining order forbidding him from contacting the victim for ten years.
He is also required to register as a sex offender and is prohibited from contacting any children under the age of 16 for a decade.
Furthermore, he is barred from using any device capable of internet access to communicate with children, reinforcing the court’s commitment to protecting vulnerable minors.
This case underscores the ongoing issues surrounding sexual offences against minors in Manchester and serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact such crimes have on victims and their families.
