GARY BUTCHER AND HIS DANGEROUS ESCAPE FROM LINCOLNSHIRE PRISON
An individual identified as Gary Butcher, described as an extremely dangerous sex offender, managed to escape from custody and remained at large for several days before being captured. The incident prompted a significant and intense manhunt across multiple regions, involving law enforcement agencies from different areas.
Gary Butcher, aged 55, was serving a life sentence at HMP North Sea Camp located in Boston, Lincolnshire.
His conviction was for aggravated burglary, a serious crime that resulted in a lengthy incarceration.
In addition to his current sentence, Butcher has a history of convictions related to sexual offenses against women, marking him as a particularly high-risk individual.
Following his escape on Tuesday, authorities issued an urgent appeal to the public, urging anyone who might have seen Butcher or had any relevant information to contact police immediately.
The search for him spanned over three days, with law enforcement agencies collaborating extensively, including neighboring forces and partner organizations.
The breakthrough came on Friday morning when an officer from Derbyshire Constabulary located Butcher in the Swadlincote area of Derbyshire.
Demonstrating a cooperative attitude, Butcher approached the officer and voluntarily handed himself over, which led to his arrest shortly after 11.30 am.
As of that evening, he was in police custody, awaiting further proceedings.
In connection with the incident, authorities also detained a 56-year-old man on Thursday night on suspicion of assisting Butcher in evading capture.
This individual remains in custody as the investigation continues, aiming to determine his involvement in facilitating the escape.
Gary Butcher is expected to be transferred back to a secure prison environment where he will remain while police investigations unfold further.
The authorities are treating his escape as a significant and serious event, given the risk he poses.
Senior Detective Chief Inspector Rachael Cox provided comments expressing relief over the apprehension, emphasizing the collaborative effort involved in locating Butcher.
She stated, “Following a round-the-clock investigation to bring Butcher into custody, I am pleased to say that we have now apprehended this man.” She also reassurance that “at this stage, we don't believe he's committed further offences.” Detective Cox took the opportunity to thank the public for their support, highlighting the effectiveness of community cooperation during this crisis.
She commended the dedicated work of officers, staff, and partner agencies in successfully tracking down and capturing Butcher.
Prior to his recapture, authorities had warned the public about the possibility that Butcher might attempt to “charm his way into homes,” indicating a level of manipulative behavior and danger.
Law enforcement officials, including Chief Superintendent Kate Anderson, described him as “extremely dangerous,” underscoring the threat posed by his escape.
This incident follows a similar event just three months earlier, when fellow sex offender Paul Robson escaped from the same facility.
Robson, who was imprisoned in 2000 for breaking into a woman's home and sexually assaulting her, was ultimately found in Skegness after a four-day search.
The recurrence of such escapes from HMP North Sea Camp highlights ongoing concerns over security and management at the facility, especially concerning violent and sexually dangerous offenders from Lincolnshire.
