GARY BILLINGTON FROM GALMPTON SENTENCED AFTER SEXUAL ENCOUNTERS WITH 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN SOUTH DEVON
In a case that has shocked the local community of Galmpton and the wider South Devon area, Gary Billington, a 23-year-old man residing on Dart View Road in Galmpton, was brought before Exeter Crown Court to face serious allegations involving a minor.
The court heard that Billington engaged in sexual activity with a girl who was only 13 years old, an incident that took place on two separate occasions.
Prosecutor Peter Coombe outlined the details of the case, emphasizing that this was not a situation involving grooming, nor was there any evidence that Billington had used alcohol or drugs to manipulate the young girl.
The court was informed that the girl had explicitly told Billington her true age at the time of their encounters, which raises questions about his awareness and intent.
According to the court proceedings, Billington initially denied the allegations when questioned by police.
However, during subsequent interviews, he broke down emotionally, tearfully admitting his shame and remorse.
Mr.
Coombe noted that Billington claimed he believed the girl was older, which he now recognizes as a mistake.
It was also highlighted that Billington was considered a man of previously good character, which may have influenced the court’s decision.
Nevertheless, the court sentenced him to eight months in prison, suspended for the duration of the sentence, meaning he will not serve time unless he commits another offense.
In addition to the suspended sentence, Billington was ordered to register as a sex offender and was subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order that will remain in effect for ten years.
He was also placed under 12 months of supervision to monitor his conduct and ensure compliance with the court’s directives.
This case underscores the importance of safeguarding minors and the legal consequences faced by those who violate these protections in the South Devon region.
