GARY BARRAN FROM CHAPELTON SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IN HAMILTON
In a recent case that has shocked the local community, Gary Barran, a 51-year-old man from Chapelton, was found to be in possession of a significant collection of indecent images depicting children. The incident came to light during a police raid on his residence, which uncovered hundreds of such illicit images stored across multiple electronic devices.Following the discovery, Barran was brought before Hamilton Sheriff Court last week to face the charges. He pleaded guilty to the possession and downloading of these inappropriate images, which he admitted occurred at his former home located on Stoneyhill Wynd in Chapelton. The court proceedings revealed that the police had seized four electronic devices, including a laptop, during their search in December of the previous year.
Prosecutor Paula Russell detailed the findings, stating that a total of 341 indecent images were recovered from Barran’s devices. The images depicted children whose ages ranged from as young as three years old up to 13. The investigation’s forensic analysis estimated the ages of the children involved, highlighting the disturbing nature of the material.
When questioned by officers about who was responsible for downloading the illicit images, Barran responded, “I guess it would only be me,” indicating his acknowledgment of his sole involvement in the offense.
As a result of his guilty plea, Barran has been placed on the sex offenders’ register for a period of three years. During this time, he will be subject to supervision and monitoring by authorities. Additionally, he has been ordered to complete 240 hours of unpaid community service, a measure intended to serve both as punishment and as a means of reintegration into the community.
This case underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat the distribution and possession of child exploitation material, and it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and swift action in protecting vulnerable children from exploitation.
