MANCHESTER MAN JAILED FOR PUBLIC DECENCY OFFENCE TARGETING SCHOOLGIRLS
A pervert targeted schoolgirls walking through a park during a ‘frightening’ ordeal.Garmyan Hama, 36, had his hands down his trousers while he repeatedly stared at two teenagers in a park in east Manchester.The pair were left feeling ‘uncomfortable’ as they tried to make their way home.Manchester Crown Court heard there have been allegations on social media of Hama being involved in other offences of a ‘very troubling type’.
But the judge stressed he was only sentencing Hama for a single offence of outraging public decency.He is set to be released from prison imminently, having already served his sentence after a period behind bars on remand.
Prosecuting, Ellen Shaw said that two girls, aged 15 and 16, were walking home from school through the park on March 28, at about 4.30pm.They noticed a man in the park was ‘staring’ at them, and had his ‘hands down his trousers’.
The pair looked away but realised they needed to pass him to get home.Ms Shaw said the girls noticed he was continuing to stare at them, and was starting to ‘move his hands’ up and down.
He still stared at them as they left the park which made the girls feel ‘uncomfortable’.After returning home, the mother of one of the girls searched a Facebook page and found a post which claimed there had been a ‘suspicious looking male’ who had been ‘making advances towards young people in the park’.She showed an attached photo of the man to the girls, who they believed was the same person who had stared at them earlier.
The police were contacted, and Hama, who followed the court proceedings with the assistance of an interpreter, was identified.Judge Nicholas Dean KC told the defendant: “As you know, the local community...
believe that you have been responsible for a number of acts of a very troubling type, and other behaviour that they regard as criminal.“But I want to make it clear that I have to deal with you for a single offence of outraging public decency.
In my judgement, you were targeting schoolgirls and either masturbating or simulating masturbating in front of them.
You accept that that was what you did.“I don’t know how or whether you can imagine how frightening that was for those that you were aiming your behaviour at.
It doesn’t seem to me, having read the pre-sentence report, that you understand the seriousness of your behaviour.”The judge said under sentencing guidelines, the range of prison terms for the offence was between three months and a year.“It does not seem to me that your case can be said to be the most serious of cases within that range,” Judge Dean added.
Having pleaded guilty, Hama was granted credit and his sentence was reduced from nine months to eight months in prison.Given that he has been in custody since April, and under early release provisions, Hama was told he had served the sentence and would be released immediately.
He will be on licence for the remainder of his sentence.A restraining order was passed for five years, preventing him from contacting the two victims and banning him from the park.
Hama, of Cheetwood Road, Cheetham Hill, pleaded guilty to outraging public decency.
