GARETH LUCAS SENTENCED TO SEVEN YEARS FOR GROOMING CHILDREN IN KENT
A man named Gareth Lucas, formerly residing in Tunbridge Wells, has been sentenced to seven years in prison after being found guilty of attempting to groom children for sexual abuse through social media platforms. The investigation revealed that Lucas engaged in a disturbing pattern of online behavior aimed at exploiting minors, specifically targeting two children he believed to be only 14 years old.
Between August 2 and November 13, 2019, Lucas, operating under the alias ‘Garfuncle Lucas,’ accessed popular social media applications such as Facebook and various instant messaging services.
His goal was to locate and contact young individuals he thought were vulnerable.
Despite receiving multiple responses from the children, who explicitly stated they were 14 years old and still in school, Lucas persisted in sending them explicit images and messages.
He urged them to participate in sexual activities and to send him indecent photographs, demonstrating a clear intent to exploit and abuse.
In a further disturbing development, Lucas made plans to meet one of the children in Sevenoaks, with the apparent intention of carrying out sexual abuse on a train.
However, it was later revealed that the profiles he was communicating with did not belong to real children but were linked to fictitious accounts created to lure and entrap offenders.
Lucas was arrested in Tunbridge Wells on November 12, 2019, and taken into police custody.
During police interviews, he initially denied any wrongdoing, claiming that his phone had been hacked and that he was not responsible for the messages.
Despite his denial, evidence collected during the investigation proved otherwise.
At Maidstone Crown Court, Lucas faced multiple charges.
He admitted to two counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and three counts of attempting to cause a child to engage in sexual activity.
He also faced a charge of attempting to arrange or facilitate a child sex offence, but he denied this particular allegation.
After a trial, the court found him guilty of all charges.
On September 22, 2023, Lucas, aged 31 and residing on Hollingworth Road in Maidstone, was sentenced to seven years in prison.
Additionally, he will serve an extended license period of four years upon release.
The court also imposed a lifelong sexual harm prevention order, restricting his future conduct, and mandated that he be registered as a sex offender for life.
The case has been described as highly concerning by law enforcement officials.
Detective Constable Carl Evans, from the Paedophile Online Investigation Team, commented: “Lucas made persistent and repeated efforts to contact children for his own gratification.
He displayed a clear desire to meet and abuse them, and the graphic detail and demands he included in his messages was hugely concerning.” He further emphasized the importance of parental vigilance, urging parents of children with mobile phones and tablets to have open conversations about internet safety.
“Children should only communicate with people they know personally, and any suspicions or inappropriate advances from strangers should be reported immediately to parents, schools, or the police,” he added.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking online and the need for constant awareness and protective measures to safeguard vulnerable minors in Kent and beyond.
