HORSFORTH MAN JAILED FOR BRUTAL ASSAULT ON EX-PARTNER
Gareth Jones, of Broadgate Walk in Horsforth, was involved in a violent assault outside a woman's mother's home.
The attack took place on January 18 this year, where Jones set upon the woman after discovering she had been unfaithful to his partner.
During the incident, he struck her repeatedly in the face, causing injuries that led to her being left unconscious and suffering seizures.
Witnesses described her trying to 'crawl like a baby' to escape from him.
The court heard that Jones threatened to 'kill them all' and had a history of violence, including previous convictions for assaulting his partner, arson, racially aggravated public disorder, and taking a vehicle without consent.
Although he admitted using a dog lead in the attack, Jones claimed it was in self-defense.
The judge concluded he was the aggressor, describing the attack as premeditated, stating: 'She was known to you since she was a child...Your first actions included striking her on the shoulder, then attacking her with continued violence, kicking her to the ground, and leaving her unconscious without medical aid.' Jones was convicted of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and received an extended sentence of 11 years—7 years in custody with two-thirds to be served before parole, and a four-year extended license period.
The victim sustained a fractured left eye socket and other injuries, requiring surgery, and her children continue to suffer from the emotional aftermath.
