GARETH HOLIDAY, 37, JAILED IN ROCHDALE FOR ATTEMPTING TO MEET 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL FOR SEX
Gareth Holliday, aged 37, has been sentenced to prison after attempting to meet what he believed was a 13-year-old girl for sex, in a case resulting from a paedophile hunter group's sting operation, Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court heard. The court was told that Holliday traveled from his home in Blackburn to a location in Rochdale, intending to have sex with a girl he thought was 13.
However, he was unaware that he was speaking to an older woman acting as a decoy, and he was caught in the act.
He was confronted at the scene, and police were called.
Holliday was arrested, and during questioning, he did not deny exchanging sexual messages with who he believed was a minor, but he claimed he was there to "make sure she got home safe." Mark Friend, defending Holliday, explained that Holliday suffers from learning difficulties and has an extremely low IQ.
"He has been met with tragedy," Mr.
Friend said, adding, "He and his partner — who has similar learning difficulties — have been in a relationship for some time, and that tragedy...
was devastating, the loss of his second child." He further noted, "It's unlikely to engender much sympathy, but it's right that the court hears it." Following his arrest, Holliday was subjected to some disciplinary actions within the community and has since moved addresses.
His defense highlighted that "he would not be a difficult man to bully." Prosecutor Anna Bond revealed that Holliday initiated contact with the decoy via social media, asking if she would like to be his "sex friend." She confirmed she was 13, yet he continued to send her sexually explicit messages through WhatsApp.
Holliday also sent explicit images of himself and encouraged the decoy to do the same.
He tried to cover his tracks by deleting some messages while instructing her to do the same, the court was told.
Judge Elliot Knopf sentenced Holliday to two years and eight months imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to seven child sex offences.
In addition, Holliday will be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and will be registered on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
The judge acknowledged Holliday's vulnerabilities, stating, "I accept that this will be difficult for you.
You are someone who may prove to be vulnerable." However, he emphasized that Holliday was fully aware of his actions and pointed out, "These are serious offences that are far too common in our society nowadays." The court emphasized the importance of appropriate sentencing to serve as a deterrent and to uphold societal standards, noting that the public expects individuals involved in such activities to face just consequences.
