GARETH GILLIES FROM GLASGOW ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE CHILD ABUSE IMAGE CHARGES AT BRAEHEAD SHOPPING CENTRE
In April 2019, authorities uncovered disturbing evidence involving Gareth Gillies, a security guard employed at Braehead Shopping Centre near Glasgow.Gillies, aged 39 and residing in Knightswood, was found to possess a collection of child abuse images on his mobile phone, which led to his arrest and subsequent court proceedings.
Gillies was discovered to have stored 17 illicit photographs depicting children aged between five and 15.
These images were located within a folder labeled 'screenshots' on his device, and it was revealed that he had also used Google to search for similar illegal content.
The police investigation was initiated following a tip-off received in April of the previous year, which prompted a search of his phone and the discovery of the disturbing material.
Further compounding the allegations, it was reported that Gillies had shared some of these vile images on Twitter, raising concerns about his involvement in the distribution of such material.
The court was informed that the images included young children in various compromising and illegal scenarios, highlighting the severity of the offense.
In addition to the digital evidence, it was revealed that Gillies had participated in promotional activities for Braehead Shopping Centre, posing for photographs in costume alongside young children.
One such image showed him dressed in an Inuit 'Eskimo' outfit with a girl, while another depicted him wearing a reindeer costume during a visit to a city school.
Authorities clarified that this latter incident was not believed to be connected to his employment at Braehead.
During the court hearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court, prosecutors outlined the gravity of the case, emphasizing the potential for a custodial sentence.
However, Gillies was ultimately spared jail time.
Instead, he was sentenced to 130 hours of unpaid work and was placed on the sex offenders register.
The judge's decision reflected a combination of factors, including his admission of guilt and the circumstances of the case.
Despite the leniency in sentencing, the case drew significant public concern, given Gillies' role as a security guard and his apparent involvement in activities that exploited children.
The court's ruling aimed to balance justice with rehabilitation, but the case remains a stark reminder of the ongoing issues surrounding child exploitation and the importance of vigilant law enforcement.
