Kilgetty Child Sexual Abuser
In a case that has shocked the community of Kilgetty, Gareth Evans, a 61-year-old resident of Kerrs Way, was brought before Swansea Crown Court to face serious charges related to the possession of indecent images of children. The proceedings, held in January 2018, revealed that Evans had downloaded a significant number of illicit images, including some of the most severe Category A material, which involves the worst forms of child exploitation.
During the court session, it was disclosed that Evans had admitted to possessing a total of 16 indecent images classified as Category A, with two of these being in the form of films. In addition, he confessed to holding 64 images categorized as B, one of which was a video, along with 127 images classified as Category C. These categories reflect the increasing severity and explicitness of the material involved.
Judge Paul Thomas, presiding over the case, acknowledged Evans' apparent remorse, noting that he had already completed 15 sessions of a program called the New Beginning course, which is designed to address such offending behavior. Despite this, the judge issued a stark warning about the gravity of Evans' actions, emphasizing that he had engaged in a heinous trade that involves the abuse of real children. Judge Thomas made it clear that if Evans were to reoffend, he would face immediate and serious consequences, stating, “If you come back you will see me looking across this courtroom and you will leave through the other door.”
As part of his sentence, Evans was sentenced to 32 weeks in prison, but this was suspended for 18 months, meaning he would not serve time unless he committed another offense within that period. Additionally, he was ordered to undertake 45 days of rehabilitation activities, complete 150 hours of unpaid community work, and register as a sex offender with the police for the next decade. These measures are intended to monitor and manage his behavior moving forward.
Prior to this, in December 2017, Evans had already admitted to similar charges at Haverfordwest Magistrates Court. He pleaded guilty to making indecent images of children, which included 16 images and videos of the most serious Category A, 64 counts of Category B images, and 127 of Category C. The magistrates transferred the case to Swansea Crown Court for sentencing scheduled on January 2, 2018. Evans was released on unconditional bail and was instructed to register as a sex offender, highlighting the ongoing legal and social consequences of his actions.
