Gareth Evans, aged 48, was involved in a violent assault on his partner after a night of drinking.
During the incident, which occurred in the early hours of October 6 last year, Evans placed his victim in a chokehold and assaulted her.
When the woman, who has asthma, told him she couldn't breathe, Evans reportedly said: "I know you can't breath, you stupid b****, I'm going to kill you." Following her attempt to break free, Evans punched her multiple times.
The woman managed to escape her Hartlepool home and called the police from a phone box just before 4am.
Court proceedings revealed that Evans, who was homeless at the time, had known the victim for a long time and that their relationship was relatively new, only lasting four weeks.
The attack occurred after she had asked him to sleep on the sofa due to his intoxication.
Evans, who pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, intentional strangulation, and making a threat to kill, was later found lying under a duvet in Burn Valley Gardens.
He has three previous convictions for domestic violence, along with others for assaulting police officers and criminal damage.
Notably, in 2014, he was convicted of wounding a victim with a knife.
The court heard that Evans expressed remorse, pledging not to drink again and wishing to improve his life to support his ailing father.
He was sentenced to 30 months in prison and was given an indefinite restraining order to prevent contact with the victim.
