GARETH DRAKE FROM EXETER CAUGHT WITH DISTURBING CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AND VIDEOS
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Exeter, Gareth Drake, a 33-year-old resident of Grendon Road, was found to possess a collection of highly disturbing images and videos depicting child abuse. The police investigation was initiated after authorities traced his online activity, which led to a detailed examination of his computer equipment.
During the search, law enforcement officials discovered a total of 137 still images and ten videos, all downloaded between June and September 2015.
Among these, a significant number were classified in the most severe category, known as Category A, indicating the depiction of serious abuse involving adults raping very young children.
The youngest child identified in these images was estimated to be just 18 months old, highlighting the extreme nature of the material Drake had stored.
The images and videos showed children in obvious distress or pain, with some of the most disturbing content involving penetration and explicit acts inflicted upon children under the age of two.
The police reports and expert assessments confirmed the severity and disturbing nature of the material, which has caused considerable concern among authorities and the public alike.
Gareth Drake was charged with two counts of making indecent images.
During his court appearance, he admitted to the charges and was subsequently sentenced to nine months in prison, although the sentence was suspended for two years.
Additionally, he was ordered to complete 25 days of rehabilitation work through the probation service, aimed at addressing his use of pornography and issues related to heavy drinking.
In court, Recorder Mr.
Richard Stead expressed his deep concern over the nature of the images, particularly emphasizing the presence of Category A material that depicted penetration and involved children under two years old.
He described the images as extremely disturbing and noted the aggravating factors related to the age and vulnerability of the children depicted.
Furthermore, the court was informed of reports from a psychologist and the probation service indicating that Drake exhibits autistic traits, which have contributed to difficulties in his life.
This context was considered during sentencing, but it did not diminish the seriousness of his offenses.
Prosecutor Mr.
Lee Bremridge explained that Drake’s online activities, including use of chat rooms and Skype chats, facilitated the distribution and viewing of such illicit material.
The investigation revealed that some images appeared to originate from chat conversations, further illustrating the extent of his engagement with this disturbing content.
The case has raised ongoing concerns about online safety and the importance of monitoring internet activity to prevent the proliferation of child abuse material.
Authorities continue to emphasize the need for vigilance and swift action in cases involving the exploitation of children through digital platforms.
