GAGANDEEP GULATI SENTENCED IN LEICESTER FOR RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT ON YOUNG WOMAN

A young woman in Leicester fell victim to a heinous assault carried out by Gagandeep Gulati, a 20-year-old man whose actions have now led to a significant prison sentence. The incident, which took place last September, involved Gulati approaching the victim during a night out and coercing her to accompany him to a nearby park. Once there, he subjected her to a brutal act of rape and sexual assault, actions that have left a lasting impact on the survivor.

Adding a disturbing layer to the crime, Gulati was recorded on his mobile phone during the assault. Shockingly, he later shared these intimate clips with others, further violating the victim’s privacy and dignity. The police were alerted to the incident, and detectives from the specialized rape and serious sexual violence investigation team responded swiftly to the scene. Their investigation uncovered footage of the assault, but initially, they faced difficulties in identifying the perpetrator.

It was during the course of their inquiries that Detective Constable Matt Smith recognized Gulati from the video footage. This recognition led to Gulati’s arrest and subsequent detention. During police interviews, Gulati attempted to deny his involvement, claiming that he had been assaulted by the victim and that she had raped him. His attempts to shift blame and deny responsibility did not hold up in court.

At Leicester Crown Court, the jury found Gulati guilty of multiple charges, including rape, two counts of sexual assault, and sharing an explicit video without the victim’s consent. The court sentenced him on March 28 to six years in prison. Additionally, Gulati will be registered on the sex offenders register for life, reflecting the severity of his crimes.

Detective Constable Matt Smith commented on the case, emphasizing Gulati’s lack of remorse. “Even during cross-examination, Gulati tried to claim that the victim had instigated the sexual activity and attempted to blame her for the offence,” he said. “He has shown no remorse for his actions, which were clearly motivated by a desire for sexual gratification at the expense of a young woman who was alone. The victim has demonstrated remarkable bravery by reliving her ordeal during the trial, and I hope that this conviction will help her find some closure and enable her to move forward with her life.”
