FREDERICK STEER CAUGHT WITH INDECENT IMAGES IN GLASGOW'S SILVERBURN SHOPPING CENTRE
In August of the previous year, a disturbing incident unfolded at the bustling Silverburn Shopping Centre in Glasgow, leading to the arrest of a man identified as Frederick Steer, aged 64.The sequence of events began when Steer accidentally dropped his Sony mobile phone within the premises, an act that inadvertently set the stage for his subsequent legal troubles.
Security personnel at Silverburn recovered the device and, during routine handling, the phone unexpectedly rang.
When a staff member pressed a button to answer, an alarming image appeared on the screen—an inappropriate photograph of a child.
This shocking discovery prompted further investigation, revealing that the device contained multiple similar images, raising serious concerns about the nature of the content stored on it.
According to prosecutor Claire Wallace, Steer approached a phone shop within the shopping centre, appearing visibly flustered.
He explained that his mobile phone was missing and requested assistance to block the device, likely to prevent misuse or further access.
Following this, Steer engaged with security officers, who then promptly notified the police about the situation.
The authorities responded swiftly, and Steer was taken into custody.
During the police investigation, officers recovered the phone and found it contained eight indecent images of children, along with three video clips depicting similar material.
The evidence was sufficient to charge Steer with possession of child pornography.
On the day of the hearing, he pleaded guilty to the charges of possessing indecent images of children.
The case was brought before Glasgow Sheriff Court, where Sheriff Paul Crozier decided to defer sentencing until the following month, allowing for further consideration of the case.
Steer’s bail was also continued, ensuring he remains free until the next court date.
