FRANCIS SANDERSON'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN GLASGOW AND BEYOND LEAD TO 15-YEAR SENTENCE
A notorious serial offender, Francis Sanderson, has been handed down a substantial prison sentence after a long history of sexual violence that spanned over a decade. Sanderson, who is also known by the surname Campbell, was convicted of attacking and abusing six women across various locations, including Glasgow, Moray, Easter Ross, and Inverness. The High Court in Inverness heard harrowing details of his crimes, which took place between 2008 and 2020, revealing a pattern of predatory behavior that left lasting scars on his victims. One of the most disturbing cases involved a young girl, only 14 years old at the time, who was raped in a public park. The court was told that Sanderson’s assault on her was particularly brazen, occurring in a public space that should have been safe. Another victim endured a terrifying ordeal where she was restrained with a sock and tape before being subjected to a severe sexual assault. These incidents are just a few examples of the brutality that characterized Sanderson’s offending spree.
Prosecutors from the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) outlined that Sanderson’s modus operandi often involved attempts to exert control over his victims through threats and physical violence. In one instance, he even assaulted a police officer who attempted to arrest him, further demonstrating his dangerous and aggressive nature. The court found him guilty of multiple charges, including six counts of rape, along with other sexual offenses and assault charges.
In sentencing, the court imposed a term of 15 years in prison, with an additional five-year extension, reflecting the severity and persistence of his crimes. Furthermore, Sanderson was ordered to remain on the sex offenders register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions. His actions have caused profound trauma and upheaval in the lives of those he attacked, leaving a legacy of pain and fear.
Fraser Gibson, the National Procurator Fiscal for High Court Sexual Offending, praised the bravery of the victims who came forward to testify against Sanderson. He emphasized the importance of justice and the commitment of COPFS to hold offenders accountable. Detective Inspector Gordon Patullo also commented on the case, highlighting Sanderson’s dangerous and controlling behavior. He expressed hope that the lengthy sentence would provide some measure of closure for the victims and assist them in moving forward from their traumatic experiences.
