HADDINGTON PAEDOPHILE FRANCIS HARDIE SENTENCED IN LIVINGSTON COURT FOR ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRL

In a case that has shocked the local community, Francis Hardie, a resident of Haddington, was sentenced to three years in prison after admitting to the sexual abuse of an eight-year-old girl over a period of several years. The abuse, which took place between 1984 and 1988, involved repeated acts of lewd, indecent, and libidinous behavior that left a lasting impact on the victim, now a woman in her 40s.

Hardie, aged 70 at the time of sentencing, pleaded guilty to the charges during his appearance at Livingston Sheriff Court. The court was informed that his misconduct began with him simulating sexual acts with the young girl and gradually escalated to more severe abuse. The victim recounted that the abuse ceased abruptly when she started attending secondary school, for reasons that remain unclear. Despite the trauma inflicted, she revealed that she continued to suffer from the psychological scars of the abuse to this day, as detailed in her victim impact statement.

The court heard that Hardie, who was living in Broxburn and Blackburn, West Lothian at the time, exploited his position of trust. The girl’s mother, who was going through a difficult period involving marriage issues and separation from her partner, entrusted Hardie with the care of her daughter and two other children. Unaware of his sinister actions, she allowed her daughter to visit him, believing she was in a safe environment. It was only when the girl turned 14, two years after the abuse had stopped, that she confided in her mother about the horrifying details of what had happened.

This revelation prompted her mother to confront Hardie directly. He responded by promising to surrender himself to the police. However, when law enforcement officials interviewed him, he initially denied any sexual misconduct and claimed that no confrontation had taken place. Hardie, who resides at Edward Court, Haddington, was subsequently charged and brought before the court.

During sentencing, Sheriff Kenneth Maciver emphasized the gravity of the offenses, noting that Hardie’s abuse spanned a four-year period when the girl was approximately seven or eight years old and later at around 11 or 12. The sheriff highlighted the profound and ongoing effects of the abuse on the victim, stating that her suffering had not ended with the conclusion of the abuse but persisted into her adulthood. The court was also reminded of Hardie’s prior criminal record, which included a conviction for a serious sexual assault with intent to rape, as well as other convictions and a custodial sentence.

Sheriff Maciver described Hardie as a violent and drunken man, traits that compounded his profile as a sexual offender. He stressed that the court must treat historic sexual offenses as if they had occurred recently, underscoring the seriousness of the case. The sentence of three years was reduced from an initial four-year term due to Hardie’s early guilty plea, which spared the victim from the trauma of giving evidence in court.

Furthermore, the sheriff announced that Hardie’s name would be entered onto the sex offenders’ register indefinitely, reflecting the severity of his crimes. He acknowledged that the victim’s acceptance of Hardie’s guilty plea marked the end of her ordeal in terms of court proceedings, allowing her to begin her process of recovery. The victim, upon hearing her abuser’s sentence, expressed her relief with a simple but powerful statement: “I’m buzzing!”
