PETERBOROUGH MAN SENTENCED AFTER HOCKEY STICK ATTACK ON EX-PARTNER
A 34-year-old man named Florin Bairam, who lives on Northfield Road in New England, Peterborough, has received a prison sentence of over three years following a violent assault on his former partner.
The incident involved Bairam dragging the woman by her hair and exerting control over her daily life by taking her money, seizing her phone, and restricting her to basic activities such as eating, bathing, and sleeping—only when he allowed her to do so.
He also made threats to kill her and their children.
The abusive behavior was uncovered during a police intervention when Bairam was himself a victim of assault.
During that encounter, he aggressively told the victim to stay silent when she spoke to officers in Romanian, made a 'cut-throat gesture' as they departed, and displayed bruises along with evidence of ongoing abuse.
The woman expressed her desire to leave the country to escape Bairam but felt too terrified to do so.
On October 4, at Cambridge Crown Court, Bairam admitted to charges of false imprisonment and actual bodily harm.
He was sentenced to two years and two months in prison and was subject to a restraining order preventing contact with the victim.
He also received an 18-month sentence for unrelated burglary and fraud offenses, bringing his total incarceration period to three years and eight months.
Detective Constable Edyta Nightingale, who led the investigation, praised the victim's bravery for coming forward and highlighted the importance of addressing domestic abuse to protect victims and bring perpetrators to justice.
