Crumpsall Child Sexual Abuser
In August 2022, a disturbing case unfolded at Minshull Street Crown Court involving Filomena Oliveira, a woman from Crumpsall, who was accused of sharing highly inappropriate and illegal videos involving young children. Oliveira, who was heavily pregnant at the time, appeared in court visibly emotional, breaking down in tears as she faced charges related to the distribution of indecent images of children.
Oliveira, aged 43 and residing on Coppleridge Drive in Crumpsall, was charged with three counts of distributing indecent images of children. She was accompanied by a Portuguese translator during her court appearance. The charges stemmed from her actions dating back to June 15, 2019, when she shared a particular video three times online, including on Facebook Messenger, where she used the username Filomena.Pedro1.
The video in question depicted two children, including a young boy estimated to be between 18 months and two years old. The court was told that after police seized her mobile phone, investigators discovered additional evidence: a second video shared twice via WhatsApp involving three children, believed to be aged between nine and 14 years old.
Prosecutor Emma Clarke detailed the nature of the videos, stating, “The footage shows a male child, aged around 18 months to two years old, and a female child aged around four to five years, undressing and simulating sexual intercourse.” She explained that the case was referred to Greater Manchester Police, who conducted a search of Oliveira’s residence on October 16, 2020.
During the search, police seized her phone and found another video that had been shared on two separate occasions via WhatsApp, specifically on June 8, 2019, and June 8, 2020. The footage involved a female child estimated to be between 11 and 14 years old, along with two male children aged approximately nine to 12 years.
Oliveira was interviewed by police on December 18, 2020, during which she admitted to possessing and distributing both videos. She pleaded guilty to three counts of distributing category A indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of children, covering the period from June 7, 2019, to October 17, 2020.
In her defense, her legal representative, Mr. Daniel Gaskell, explained that Oliveira had entered her guilty plea at the magistrates’ court in June. He also claimed that she ‘did not understand’ that sending such images was an illegal act in the UK.
Judge Suzanne Goddard QC delivered her sentence, condemning Oliveira’s actions as ‘absolutely disgusting and distressing.’ She expressed her difficulty in understanding why anyone would send such images, emphasizing the gravity of the offenses. The judge highlighted the importance of recognizing that real children are victims of these crimes and that sharing such material causes significant harm.
Oliveira was sentenced to 15 months in prison, but the sentence was suspended for two years. Additionally, she is required to complete 25 days of rehabilitation activities and must sign the sex offender notification requirement for a decade. Due to her advanced pregnancy and language barriers, the judge deemed it impractical to impose a community service order, which is often part of such sentences.
