In a series of disturbing incidents that unfolded across Manchester and later in Nelson, Lancashire, police have apprehended Farhan Zafar, a 22-year-old man whose actions have caused significant concern within the community.The case details how he was caught in a heinous act outside a woman’s residence in Manchester, leading to an investigation that uncovered a pattern of sexual misconduct, online indecency, and ongoing harassment.
The sequence of events began when the victim, suspecting something was amiss, took matters into her own hands by setting up a makeshift trap in her backyard.
She used a fishing line positioned to trigger a noise if someone entered, along with a metal bucket to alert her to any intruder.
Her suspicions were confirmed when she heard the bucket clatter late at night while she was in the bath.
She also heard a male voice that sounded disgruntled, which further heightened her concern.
Recognizing that her backyard was enclosed with a wall and only accessible through a locked gate, she deduced that the intruder had probably come over the wall.
The woman promptly reported the incident to the police.
Further investigation by authorities revealed that Zafar had been seen engaging in inappropriate and illegal activities near the woman’s home.
Neighbors observed him wiping something off her front window, and law enforcement officials were told he had previously been seen standing naked in her garden at night, illuminated by a phone torch and engaged in lewd acts that involved masturbation.
These sightings painted a disturbing picture of Zafar's conduct in her vicinity.
The police moved swiftly and arrested Zafar at his residence on November 23 of the previous year.
Upon seizing his phone, investigators uncovered an extensive collection of indecent images of children, totaling 384 pictures.
Among these, 137 were classified as the most serious category, indicating the severity of the content.
During a police interview, Zafar claimed he was unaware that engaging in sexual acts with a 14-year-old girl was a crime if both parties consented.
However, legal experts and the prosecution clarified that the case was clear-cut, especially considering Spain, which has the same age of consent.
The girl involved in the past abuse was only 14 at the time of the incidents, which spanned over four months in 2021.
The court heard that Zafar’s relationship with the girl began shortly after their initial meeting in the summer of 2021.
By about two weeks later, he suggested they start a relationship, and in August of that year, they engaged in sexual activity at his home on multiple occasions.
Records indicated that he was responsible for six sexual encounters with the girl, including some in his car.
The girl confided in her mother about the abuse in November 2021, prompting her to report it to the authorities.
Zafar was subsequently arrested, and during his police interviews, he appeared to minimize the severity of his actions.
Feeling increasingly fixated, Zafar moved to Nelson in Lancashire after being released on bail.
It was during this period in September 2022 that his behavior escalated from minors to adult women.
He became obsessively interested in a woman he met there, repeatedly attempting to initiate contact.
After her initial rejection via Google Translate, where he asked her to teach him English, Zafar returned several times, asking her out again and attempting to borrow items from her.
She also noticed his persistent presence near her back door.
His suspicious behavior continued when neighbors observed him wiping residue on her home’s window, initially believed to be bird droppings but later suspected to be semen.
Her concern prompted her to take further precautions, culminating in the trap she set up.
Her fears were confirmed when she heard the late-night clattering of the bucket and a male voice, which she described as disgruntled, indicating a possible intrusion.
Police investigations confirmed Zafar’s suspicious activity.
Officers found evidence that he had been seen by neighbors standing at her window in the early hours of the morning, completely naked and using his phone torch to masturbate.
These behaviors, combined with the evidence of his obsession with the woman, led to his arrest at his home.
The subsequent search of his mobile device uncovered a disturbing cache of images involving children as young as 12, with 137 images deemed particularly severe.
During a victim impact statement, the woman described her feelings of anxiety and unease, emphasizing the emotional toll Zafar's actions had taken on her.
Zafar, who was homeless at the time of his arrest, pleaded guilty to a total of 16 charges including sexual activity with a child, inciting a child to engage in sexual acts, outraging public decency, possession of indecent images, and stalking.
His defense argued that Zafar’s problematic behavior was partly influenced by his drug use and traumatic experiences from his own youth.
His lawyer revealed that he had disclosed to mental health professionals that he was a victim of a serious sexual assault when he was a child and spoke of the shame he carried.
They emphasized that his offending was driven by feelings of isolation, heightened by his drug misuse and unresolved childhood trauma.
Judge Maurice Greene addressed Zafar directly, acknowledging his youth at the time of the offenses—only 20 years old.
The judge also noted that Zafar’s poor English proficiency and traumatic past contributed to his social isolation and substance abuse.
Despite recognizing some remorse, the judge did not accept that Zafar’s cannabis use significantly diminished his culpability, recalling that his drug consumption was prolonged and self-induced.
Zafar was sentenced to a term of four years and two months in prison.
He was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, subjected to a ten-year sexual harm prevention order, and a ten-year restraining order was also imposed to prevent him from contacting his adult victim or anyone else involved.
The court’s sentences aim to protect the community and demonstrate the severity with which such offenses are treated by the justice system.
