COVENTRY FACEBOOK GROOMING GANG SENTENCED TO 42 YEARS FOR RAPE AND HUMAN TRAFFICKING

In a disturbing case that has shocked the Coventry community, an organized group involved in grooming young girls through social media platforms, particularly Facebook, has been brought to justice.

The gang, composed of five men from Coventry, systematically targeted vulnerable teenagers, luring them with promises of gifts, shopping trips, and social outings.

These deceptive tactics were used to gain their trust before the offenders transported the girls to secluded locations where they subjected them to alcohol and drug abuse, ultimately leading to sexual assaults and rapes.

On January 2017, the court proceedings revealed the extent of the heinous crimes committed by the group, which included Waqaar Khan, Kadeem Bourne, Marcus Woolcock, Keenan Kelly, and Zahid Chaudhary.

The court found all five guilty of a total of 18 criminal charges, encompassing rape, sexual assault, and human trafficking.

The sentences handed down reflect the severity of their offenses, with the longest being 14 and a half years for Waqaar Khan, who was convicted of two counts of trafficking and three counts of rape.

Waqaar Khan, aged 24, was sentenced to serve 14 and a half years in prison.

Kadeem Bourne, 23, received a sentence of 13 and a half years after being convicted of two counts of trafficking, three counts of rape, and one count of sexual assault.

The youngest member of the group, 18-year-old Keenan Kelly, was handed a ten-year sentence following convictions for two rapes, one sexual assault, and trafficking.

Kelly also admitted to possessing drugs with intent to supply.

Marcus Woolcock, aged 22, was sentenced to two and a half years for his involvement in trafficking and sexual assault, while Zahid Chaudhary, 18, received an 18-month sentence for trafficking.

The court heard that these offenders exploited social media to identify and target teenage girls, often picking them up in taxis or dropping them off at parties or isolated car parks where they would be subjected to alcohol and drug-fueled assaults.

During the trial, one victim recounted how she regained consciousness during an attack in a car, highlighting the terrifying nature of these crimes.

The court was also told that one of the victims expressed how her ability to trust others had been profoundly damaged by her experience.

Judge de Bertodano addressed the defendants directly, emphasizing the gravity of their actions.

She remarked that they must have “younger sisters or cousins who you would be horrified for if anyone treated them in the way you treated these girls.” She further explained that Waqaar Khan exploited the ease of contact through social media, manipulating vulnerable young girls’ desire to appear mature and rebellious to lure them into dangerous situations where they were sexually exploited with little chance of escape.

The sentencing underscores the serious nature of these crimes and serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by online grooming and exploitation.

The community and victims alike hope that justice will bring some measure of closure after such a traumatic ordeal.
