Huby Rapist
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Huby and beyond, Eric Raymond Coates, aged 51, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison after admitting to a series of heinous sexual crimes committed over several decades. The Leeds Crown Court heard harrowing details of his abuse, which targeted young girls aged between 11 and 14, as well as a single mother who rented a property from him. Coates’s criminal activities included indecent assaults, rapes, unlawful sexual intercourse with minors, and coercing a woman into sexual acts through threats and intimidation.
Coates, who was extradited from Serbia to face justice, pleaded guilty to a total of 15 charges. These included ten counts of indecent assault, two counts of rape, two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with girls under the age of 13, and one count of procuring a woman to engage in sexual activity by means of threats. The judge, Rodney Grant, emphasized the long-lasting impact of his actions, stating, “Those you have abused have suffered in the long-term; no one will know how much. The effect of your behaviour will affect them all their lives.”
As part of his sentence, Eric Coates will be registered on the sex offenders register for life and is prohibited from working in any capacity that involves contact with children. His crimes have left a trail of trauma and suffering that will resonate for years to come.
In a related but separate matter, Coates’s father, Raymond Coates, aged 76 and also of Huby, faced 12 sex-related charges. However, due to health issues, doctors declared last year that he was too ill to stand trial, and as a result, none of the charges have been proven in court. Prosecutor Andrew Campbell QC recounted a disturbing history of abuse involving the father and son, revealing that between them, they engaged in sexual acts approximately 150 times over a two-year period with an 11- to 12-year-old girl from the Easingwold area, who used to ride one of their ponies.
According to the prosecution, the abuse allegedly began in 1978 with Raymond Coates, but after Eric interrupted one of the encounters, he himself raped the girl. Subsequently, Eric began a pattern of abusing her at the pony’s stable and during pony club events. The girl reportedly felt trapped in a cycle of sexual exploitation, with threats from Eric Coates that he would publish explicit photographs of her, inform her parents, and tell her school about the abuse. There are claims that Eric’s mother, Wendy Coates, may have witnessed some of the abuse but chose to remain silent.
Further disturbing allegations emerged involving Eric Coates’s involvement with two 14-year-old girls in Scarborough. He reportedly lured them into his flat, where he encouraged them to sniff lighter fuel before subjecting them to sexual abuse. The Coates family’s criminal activities extended to their rental properties in Scarborough, where they allegedly offered rent discounts in exchange for sex. In 2002, a single mother of three, who was behind on her rent, moved into one of their properties. During a meeting to discuss her arrears, both Eric and Raymond Coates engaged in sexual acts with her, with Raymond allegedly promising to reduce her rent by two weeks afterward.
In mitigation, defense counsel Anton Lodge QC acknowledged that Raymond Coates had initiated the abuse of the girl involved in the pony riding incident and that other men had also abused the two Scarborough girls. The case was further complicated by the fact that Raymond Coates’s health prevented him from standing trial, leaving many questions unanswered.
North Yorkshire Police’s Detective Sergeant Paul Thompson, who led the investigation into Eric Coates’s crimes, expressed confidence in bringing him to justice, stating, “I always knew I would get him back. It was only a matter of time.”
In a separate and chilling development, Eric Coates was arrested and questioned by police in connection with the murder of Vicky Glass, a prostitute from Middlesbrough. Although he was released without charge, Coates maintained his innocence in an exclusive interview with The Press in 2002. He admitted to using prostitutes from the red-light district where Vicky worked but claimed he had no involvement in her death. Coates suggested that her murder might have been a warning or drug-related killing, emphasizing the fear that many women in the area live under. To date, no one has been convicted of Vicky Glass’s murder.
Adding to the disturbing family history, Eric Coates’s brother, Nigel Coates of Ascot Way, Acomb, York, was sentenced to 13 years in prison in 2003 after being found guilty of forcing his ex-wife, Linda Allsopp, and another woman to have sex with his father, Raymond Coates. Nigel’s crimes also included forcing his ex-wife to sleep with strangers and produce pornographic videos. Raymond Coates, who was also facing serious sex charges, was declared too ill to stand trial. Meanwhile, recent reports reveal that Paula Coates, aged 41, of Acomb, York, married Nigel Coates while he was incarcerated, claiming he was innocent and had never behaved inappropriately towards her. The Coates family’s history of sexual abuse and criminality continues to cast a dark shadow over the community.
