ERICK FEWINGS GUILTY OF SEXUAL ABUSE IN HULL - EX TEACHER SENTENCED
In a case that has shocked the local community, Eric Fewings, a former religious education teacher from Hull, has been convicted of multiple serious sex offences involving a vulnerable schoolgirl.The incident dates back to the 1970s, during which Fewings, aged 68 at the time of sentencing, engaged in grooming and sexual assault against a pupil at David Lister Secondary School.
Fewings, who resided at James Ingle Mews in Beverley, was described by those who knew him as a charismatic figure within the school community.
Despite his reputation, he denied all allegations of sexual misconduct, maintaining his innocence throughout the trial that took place this week.
The charges against him included five counts related to grooming and indecent assault, all of which he was found guilty of by the court.
The victim, whose identity remains protected, came forward after an encounter with Fewings at a concert.
During this meeting, Fewings reportedly told her, “You were one of my favourites,” a comment that reignited painful memories.
In response, she warned him, saying, “You f****** ruined my life, get ready for a knock at the door because one might be coming,” indicating her intent to report the abuse.
The court heard that Fewings initially began grooming the girl by assigning her small tasks, exploiting her lack of confidence and her quiet, vulnerable nature.
His manipulative behavior escalated, leading to indecent assaults within the school premises.
The abuse intensified when Fewings drove her to a secluded location, where his actions became more serious and invasive.
Judge David Tremberg sentenced Fewings to 30 months in prison, emphasizing the manipulative nature of his conduct.
The judge stated, “You groomed her, showing her the gentleness and kindness she was so lacking in her life.
Thereby, you created the opportunity to get her in your classroom on her own.” As part of his sentence, Fewings is also required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life, a measure intended to protect the community and prevent further harm.
The case highlights the importance of vigilance and the ongoing need to support victims of sexual abuse, especially those who are most vulnerable.
