EOIN BERKLEY'S HORRIFIC CRIME IN DUBLIN: SPANISH STUDENT ABDUCTION AND RAPE SHOCKS IRELAND

In November 2018, a chilling case unfolded in Dublin involving Eoin Berkley, a 25-year-old man whose heinous actions led to a 14-year prison sentence.

Berkley's crime spree included the abduction and repeated sexual assault of a young Spanish student, an incident that has left the community deeply shaken and authorities reflecting on the vulnerabilities of individuals with troubled histories.

On a Saturday afternoon, the victim, an 18-year-old woman who had recently arrived in Ireland to improve her English skills and was staying with a host family in Dublin, encountered Berkley in the city centre.

Berkley, who claimed to live on the beach, invited her to see his residence.

Trusting his words, she agreed to accompany him, unaware of the nightmare that awaited her.

He led her to a derelict site near Sandymount, where he had set up several tents, and once inside, his demeanor abruptly changed.

According to court reports, Berkley forcefully pushed her to the ground, grabbed her hands, and began to physically assault her.

Despite her protests and pleas that he was hurting her, Berkley laughed dismissively and claimed he had done this before.

When she attempted to leave, he dragged her back into the tent, tying her hands behind her back with a dog leash.

During this terrifying ordeal, Berkley revealed that he had previously killed six people and threatened to kill her as well.

He repeatedly attempted to strangle her, and at one point, he brandished a small saw, warning her that if she did not stop struggling, he would cut off her hands.

Desperate, she begged him to kill her quickly and painlessly.

Berkley responded by giving her some tablets, which she ingested, and then he donned black gloves.

The woman, overwhelmed and terrified, fell unconscious.

What followed was a prolonged period of abuse, during which Berkley raped her on three separate occasions over the course of the night and into the following day.

Throughout the ordeal, Berkley kept her captive, threatening her with violence if she attempted to escape.

He told her he would hit her with a rock if she tried to run away and expressed a disturbing lack of empathy, claiming he had lost all feelings towards people since the age of ten and had even mutilated household pets.

The victim managed to escape when Berkley fell asleep while they were at the beach.

She seized this opportunity to flee, running to her host family and calling her father in Spain, who was devastated upon hearing her account.

She told him, “I’ve being kidnapped.

I’m going to be killed.” Her father described the phone call as the worst he had ever received.

The victim was visibly traumatized, suffering from bruises on her wrists, arms, legs, and neck.

Medical tests revealed the presence of morphine, codeine, and cannabis in her system, indicating she had been drugged during the attack.

She also reported ongoing psychological trauma, including fear of sleeping in the dark and intrusive thoughts about the assault.

In her victim impact statement, she recounted her ongoing struggles, including the need for medication to prevent infections and her persistent fear that she might not survive another attack.

Investigations into Berkley's background revealed a troubling history.

He had 25 previous convictions, including unlawful possession of knives and a realistic firearm, as well as threatening and abusive behavior.

At the time of the attack, Berkley was often homeless and had a pattern of public order offenses that raised concerns about his mental health.

Notably, a month prior to the abduction, a Garda inspector in Dublin had ordered Berkley's detention under the Mental Health Act, but a doctor deemed him fit for release.

During the sentencing hearing at the Central Criminal Court, Mr.

Justice Michael White described the crimes as premeditated and particularly degrading.

He emphasized the threats Berkley made to kill the victim, which he called “blood curdling,” and noted there were 19 incidents of violence or threats during the ordeal.

The judge sentenced Berkley to concurrent terms of 14 years for each of the three rape counts, backdating the sentence to July 31, 2017, when Berkley was taken into custody.

Additionally, he imposed a three-year period of post-release supervision.

Justice White acknowledged Berkley's tragic personal history and mental health issues, citing reports that painted a grim picture of his background.

During the hearing, Berkley displayed a lack of remorse, smiling, stretching, and even chuckling when the sentence was announced.

The court also heard that Berkley was mainly sleeping rough at the time of the attack and had frequently come to Garda attention for public order disturbances.

In a poignant moment, Berkley’s own brother contacted Gardaí shortly after his detention, expressing concern that Berkley needed to be detained again under the Mental Health Act.

However, authorities found no grounds for further detention at that time.

While in custody, Berkley inscribed the words “I’m so sorry” with his own blood on the walls of a prison cell, a disturbing sign of his troubled state.

Overall, the case has cast a stark light on issues of mental health, homelessness, and the safety of vulnerable individuals in Dublin.

The community and the court have expressed their outrage and sorrow over the brutal assault, which has left a lasting scar on the victim and the city as a whole.
