BANBURY MAN ELLIS HARVEY SENTENCED FOR ABUSE OF UNDERAGE GIRL IN SHAMEFUL CRIME
In a case that has shocked the community of Banbury, Ellis Harvey, a 22-year-old man, was handed a significant prison sentence after being convicted of the serious crime of molesting a young girl over a period of time. The incident, which took place between late 2018 and April 2020, involved repeated sexual misconduct against a girl who was approximately six years his junior.
Harvey was only 19 years old when the abuse began, making the betrayal even more disturbing to those who knew him.
During the proceedings at Oxford Crown Court, a victim personal statement was read aloud by prosecutor Simon Shannon.
The young woman, whose identity remains protected by law, described the profound impact the abuse had on her life.
She recounted enduring bullying and harassment from Harvey’s family after she confided in the police about the 18-month ordeal.
According to her account, she was subjected to verbal abuse in public, with members of Harvey’s family swearing at her in the streets, which left her feeling terrified to leave her home.
The victim also revealed that she faced online abuse, with social media users calling her vile names, further compounding her distress.
She shared that she suffers from severe nightmares and flashbacks as a result of the trauma.
The girl explained that her mother has told her she talks in her sleep and shouts phrases like “get off” and “go away,” which are believed to be related to her memories of the abuse.
To cope with her pain, she tries to stay awake as long as possible to avoid reliving the nightmares, highlighting the deep psychological scars left by Harvey’s actions.
Ellis Harvey had denied the allegations, which included charges of sexual assault by penetration and engaging in sexual activity with a minor.
However, after a five-day trial in March, an Oxford jury found him guilty of the charges.
The court’s decision led to a sentencing hearing where Judge Ian Pringle QC addressed Harvey directly.
The judge acknowledged Harvey’s positive qualities and the respect he has earned from his family, friends, colleagues, and his girlfriend, who stood by him throughout the trial.
Nonetheless, the judge emphasized that the nature of Harvey’s secret misconduct was “truly shameful,” and this aspect of his character overshadowed his otherwise good reputation.
On Thursday, Judge Pringle sentenced Harvey to four years in prison.
Additionally, Harvey was placed under a sexual harm prevention order, which will restrict his activities and movements for an indefinite period.
He will also be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community.
Members of both Harvey’s and the victim’s families attended the court for the sentencing, reflecting the gravity of the case and the emotional toll it has taken on all involved.
The case has left a lasting impact on the community of Banbury, highlighting the importance of justice and the ongoing need to protect vulnerable individuals from such heinous acts.
