ELIZABETH SMILLIE SCANDAL ROCKS PAISLEY AND RENFREWSHIRE WITH ALLEGATIONS OF SEXUAL MISCONDUCT
In August 2018, a disturbing case involving allegations of sexual misconduct and inappropriate relationships emerged against Elizabeth Smillie, a music teacher based in Renfrewshire. The case was brought before the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) during a hearing held in Edinburgh, where serious accusations were laid out against her.
It was revealed that Ms.
Smillie was involved in multiple instances of inappropriate conduct with students during her tenure at Gleniffer High School in Paisley.
One of the most shocking allegations involved her being seen lying naked on top of a sixth-year pupil at her home.
Witnesses testified that they saw her in a compromising position with the student, which has raised significant concerns about her professional and personal boundaries.
Furthermore, the hearing disclosed that Ms.
Smillie was observed publicly holding hands and kissing the same girl at a well-known family park in Scotland.
These public displays of affection, including after she picked her up from a party, were documented by Scotland’s teaching watchdog.
Witnesses, including pupils, described instances where Ms.
Smillie and the student were seen holding hands and kissing during outings, such as a trip to Blair Drummond Safari Park, where they were reportedly seen engaging in intimate gestures.
Additional allegations detailed her use of social media platforms, particularly Facebook and texting, to maintain inappropriate relationships with other pupils.
The charges specify that during the 2010/2011 school year, she engaged in an inappropriate relationship with Pupil A, who was only 15 at the time.
The misconduct involved sending friend requests on Facebook, requesting her mobile number, and engaging in conversations of a personal and sexual nature.
It was also alleged that she failed to inform colleagues when Pupil A arrived at school under the influence of alcohol, and she met her outside school to kiss her, both incidents occurring while the girl was intoxicated.
Similarly, during the 2011/2012 academic year, Ms.
Smillie was accused of forming an inappropriate relationship with Pupil C, then aged 17.
The allegations state that she sent her friend requests on Facebook, shared her mobile number, and engaged in sexual conversations via social media and texts.
The teacher was also accused of repeatedly meeting Pupil C outside school hours when she was under the influence of alcohol, engaging in sexual activities that were deemed inappropriate and unprofessional.
The hearing also included testimonies from pupils who provided detailed accounts of their interactions with Ms.
Smillie.
Pupil B, a friend of Pupil C, recounted visiting the teacher’s flat with other students, where alcohol was sometimes consumed.
Pupil B described walking into a room where she saw Ms.
Smillie naked on top of Pupil C, an incident she described as “incredibly awkward” and confirmed with certainty that it was Ms.
Smillie and Pupil C in bed together.
Additional witnesses described seeing Ms.
Smillie arrive at a party in her car to pick up Pupil C, with the two holding hands inside the vehicle.
The same witnesses observed the two students holding hands and kissing during a trip to Blair Drummond Safari Park, further substantiating the allegations of inappropriate conduct.
Ms.
Smillie did not attend the hearing and was not represented during the proceedings.
She has denied any inappropriate conduct.
However, if the charges are proven, she faces the possibility of being struck off the teaching register, effectively ending her career as an educator.
The allegations against her span several years, beginning with her relationship with Pupil A during the 2010/2011 school year, when she was employed by Renfrewshire Council.
The charges include her sending Facebook friend requests, requesting mobile numbers, and engaging in sexual conversations with the pupil.
She is also accused of meeting Pupil A outside school to kiss her while she was intoxicated.
In the subsequent school year, 2011/2012, the focus shifted to her relationship with Pupil C, with similar accusations of inappropriate communication and sexual activity.
The teacher is alleged to have repeatedly met Pupil C outside school hours, often when the girl was under the influence of alcohol, engaging in sexual acts that breach professional boundaries.
In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for Renfrewshire Council stated, “We took immediate action as soon as we became aware of incidents taking place.
The employee no longer works for the council.” The case continues to unfold as the GTCS evaluates the evidence and considers the appropriate disciplinary measures.
